Mail now available

The simplicity, speed and ease of use of Internet e-mail, with the security, resilience and reach of SWIFTNet

Mail, SWIFT's person-to-person secure e-mail solution, is now available, following a successful five month pilot. The organisations that have tried it confirm the compelling value of the new messaging solution: Mail leverages your existing infrastructure, is easy to deploy and to use, and makes compliance with IT security policies simple.

Secure e-mail solution now available

Today, SWIFT is launching a new product that will bring the security, resilience and reach of SWIFTNet to your desktop (or hand-held device): Mail.

"The convenience of e-mail combined with SWIFT's security and reliability makes Mail a compelling proposition in many different business areas."
Jane Cole, Head of Solutions, FirstRand Bank Limited
Following five months of extensive piloting, SWIFT will make Mail generally available to individual users at SWIFT members, allowing them to safely and securely transmit e-mails containing sensitive information with others on SWIFTNet, using the e-mail package of their choice. Mail is SWIFT's first entry into the person-to-person messaging market.

"Mail is more than meeting expectations," says Jane Cole, Head of Solutions, FirstRand Bank Limited. "The convenience of e-mail combined with SWIFT's security and reliability makes it a compelling proposition in many different business areas."

Pilot outcome

Pilot institutions (including: Clearstream, DnBNOR, FirstRand Bank, HSBC, Nedbank, Standard Bank and SWIFT) have confirmed the compelling value proposition of Mail: all the convenience of e-mail, combined with the security and reliability of SWIFTNet, in a package that is easy to install and use, requiring no additional investment in e-mail software.

Leveraging the single window

Mail works with existing, off-the-shelf e-mail clients and servers. "There is no need to invest in any new e-mail packages, making the solution a natural complement to existing SWIFTNet messaging and the same infrastructure (Alliance interface and SWIFT connectivity) is re-used for Mail," says Mark Wooldridge, Senior Vice President, Technology Securities Services, HSBC "The challenge ahead for the industry will be to capitalise on this new flexible and secure channel for desk to desk communication."

Easy to deploy and to use

Because Mail uses SWIFT's secure network for transmitting e-mail messages, it frees the users from having to install complex push-server and desktop client software throughout their organisations.

Mail users continue to enjoy the same e-mail programmes and user experiences as before, while being assured that their e-mails are now being encrypted, signed and transmitted over SWIFT's secure and reliable network.

"Mail is extremely simple to install," confirms Karl Van Gestel, Director - Head of Department ICSD and Group Connectivity, Clearstream Banking. "What strikes most people first, is how easy Mail is to use," he continues. "You simply add '.swift' to the end of the addressee's e-mail address and the e-mail gets routed over SWIFTNet automatically. End users need no formal training."

Makes compliance with IT security policies easy

"Even a cursory analysis of the channels available shows that an institution can only really trust an electronic network it controls," says Paul Shetler, Head of Interface Applications, SWIFT. "This is because, crucially, even if data is sent by secure means, if it comes from an un-trusted source, it has to be verified before it can be acted on. SWIFTNet Mail removes that barrier."
