Fraud Management
Everyone benefits when you're vigilant in the fight to prevent fraudulent use of credit cards. The following information is provided to you as part of the Fraud Awareness Program of Diners Club International. Following these tips to help reduce your losses.
The basics of fraud protection
First, regularly train new and existing employees. Once is not enough. Each card you accept has different security features. And, from time to time, these features are enhanced for mutual protection. New employees need to know what to look for, and existing employees can benefit from a reminder. Remember — you are the front line against credit card fraud.
Here's what every merchant needs to remember:
  • Hold on to the card until the transaction is completed.
  • Check cards presented for signs of alteration or counterfeiting.
  • Compare the numbers — the embossed numbers on the front, back and on the sales slip should match.
  • Verify signatures — the signature on the back of the card and on the sales receipt should match.
Identifying potentially fradulent transactions
Your employees should be trained to watch the behavior of customers. Suspicious behavior is a potential signal of attempted credit card fraud. These behaviors include:
  • Making random purchases without regard to size, value or price.
  • Multiple purchases of identical items.
  • Purchasing large items and refusing delivery.
  • Attempts to rush through transactions or rush sales just prior to closing.
  • Displays no interest in warranties for expensive items, or accepts such offers without consideration
  • Presenting a credit card from a pocket rather than a wallet.
  • If asked for photo ID, the customer claims to have left such identification at home or in the car.
  • If the customer appears to be unusually young for utilizing credit cards.
  • If the customer is overly slow and deliberate when signing the sales receipt or quickly signs the receipt outside of your vision — they may be attempting to forge or pass a forged signature. Remember — if you are suspicious ask for a photo ID.
When you suspect fraud
If you or an employee suspect fraud, contact Diners Club International Authorization at: 1 800 525.9040. Remember, an approval number does not mean the absence of fraud. For more information regarding fraud prevention, identifying valid Diners Club International cards, handling suspicious situations, or recovering lost or stolen cards, please refer to your Operating Manual.

Identifying counterfeit or altered cards
Whenever a Diners Club International Card is presented ask the following questions. They will help you identify whether the card presented is fraudulent or not:
  1. Is this the Cardmember?
    • The Diners Club Card is NON-TRANSFERABLE. Only the Cardmember may use the Card.
    • Do the names match?
    • Verify that the name embossed on the card, in the signature panel, and appearing on the sales slip or terminal are the same.
    • When in doubt ask for a photo ID.
  2. Do the signatures match?
    • Check the card.
    • Check the sales slip.
    • Compare the signatures. Are they the same? Is the name misspelled or different?
  3. Do the account numbers match?
    • Is the account number on the front and back of the card and on the sales slip the same?
  4. Is this a valid card?
    • Verify the valid "from" and "expiration dates" embossed on the card front.
    • Is the card signed?
  5. Is the signature panel normal?
    • Does the Diners Club logo appear in the panel?
    • Is the account number engraved into the panel?
    • Is the 3-digit Card Verification Value, (CVV), security code engraved into the panel?
    • Has the panel been altered or does it appear to have been erased?
  6. Is there a unique identifier?
    • Is the unique Diners Club logo embossed on the lower right corner
    • Does it appear altered?
  7. Does the card look and feel "right?"
    • The Diners Club Personal Card and all Corporate Cards display a world map against a wavy-lined background. The Diners Club Carte Blanche Cards display a world map as a hologram against a flat charcoal gray background.
    • Does the card seem unusually flexible?
    • Does the card ink appear smudged?
    • Are the embossed characters evenly spaced?
  8. Check the hologram.
    • Does the hologram on the back appear 3-dimensional, float and change colors when tilted?
  9. Is the customer behaving normally?
    • Large quantity buys of very expensive merchandise without trying the items on.
    • Attempts at "rush" sales just prior to closing time or to try and "rush" through the transaction; excessive quantities of the same items.
    • Does the customer appear unusually anxious?
Credit card skimming
Credit card skimming is the transferring of magnetic stripe data from one credit card to another. At no time will a Diners Club International card be embossed with one name and account number but display another when processed through your terminal. Again, check the embossed numbers on the front of the card and back of the card against the sales slip. The numbers should be the same.
Mail order/telephone order
To avoid the risk of fraud, remember to ask the Cardmember for:
  • Their name exactly as it appears on the card.
  • Their card account number
  • Card valid from date.
  • Expiration date.
  • Billing address/shipping address.
  • Home or business telephone number.
  • Telephone number to reach the Cardmember (if different than home or business number).
  • To verify the billing address, utilize the AVS (address verification system) or call Diners Club International Authorizations at 1 800 525.9040 to verify the billing address.
Internet retail
You must transmit via a mechanism that protects information from being intercepted or disclosed during transmission. In addition, your web site and attendant data capture mechanism containing account information must be secure.
These are the basics. Together — you, your employees and Diners Club — can help prevent credit card fraud.
