History
Pier Luigi Fiorini, officially, founded this project on 21th, April 2003.
BeFree was in its first days a FreeBSD (but compatible also with Linux) implementation of a
new object oriented graphical environment, X11 independent.
The project is evolved and it's now a complete project for the home users.
Goals
The goal is to create a desktop operating system based on the
Linux
kernel and the
GNU utilities and compilers.
BeFree is still in development but here are the features we want for the first release:
- Fast - A new initialization mechanism will be brought to you by the Rolling project. It will be faster and much customizable than the classic SystemV init procedure.
- Low latency - Linux provides us a new exciting scheduler and preemption (much priority to user-space tasks, so the graphical user interface is fast!)
- Stable - Linux is heavily developed and supported by many people around the world, most of the time is spent on bug hunting
- Easy - BeFree will provide you an easy user interface, based on a unique guideline
- Localized - Although the main languages will be English, Italian and German, BeFree supports translation
- Standard - This project is part of the beunited.org organization that define and promote open specifications
