(IDG) -- The Netscape-Microsoft browser battle has been scored by at least four different research firms. All have concluded that Netscape's share on the market is slipping, but each firm took a slightly different snapshot of the market.

Method
AdKnowledge's servers gathered data from a one-day sample of 10 million ads served across more than 1,000 sites.
Distinction
Includes multiple usage by the same user, usage of more than one browser type and international usage.

Method
IDC conducted a telephone survey of 100 to 300 randomly selected respondents in each segment. Results were compiled and projected to the total U.S. figure.
Distinction
Doesn't measure usage of one person in multiple markets or usage of more than one browser.

Method
A mail survey of 17,500 PC-using households obtained data on home and workplace browser use and projected the findings to total U.S. households and total installed base of PCs.
Distinction
Includes all browsers used: 13 percent of PCs use both Netscape and Microsoft browsers.

Method
An online survey asked 250 computer professionals from the IntelliQuest Technology Panel which browser was primarily used at their companies.
Distinction
Data not projected; reflects percentage of respondents who say their company uses a particular browser. One respondent speaks for entire company.
