EDI Facilitator | Starting Big Bold Conversations to change the world of work | Strategist | Founder| Neurodiversity Speaker & Advocate | Championing Inclusion

🚨Controversy ahead🫣 I’ve been thinking about writing this for months but have always shied away from it for fear of being judged one way or another or cancelled. However, I pretty much cancel myself from here regularly so here goes! 😅 I’m feeling inspired by Kanika’s post about things that give her the ick. Here’s my thing that I need to get off my chest. I’m talking male allyship. Specifically men talking to women about how to be an ally for women, even to primarily male audiences - without either being sponsored by a woman, or sharing the stage with a woman or simply amplifying the work of great women. I feel it’s just another example of men taking the spotlight away from women who could share their experience, research and solutions to help address gender inequity. Taking hard-to-come-by speaker spotlights and publicity ‘at the expense of’ amazing women who are equally effective at speaking to men about allyship in a way that is authentic, non judgmental and inclusive. I understand we all have to make ends meet - I understand equity is about nuance, intersectionality and privilege. And it’s okay to note privilege but when we are in that position, on that stage - we should be reaching out a hand to put someone else in the spotlight. That’s the way we create equity. We remember our single point of commonality - being human. So I’d be interested to understand if I’m the only one struggling with this - or maybe I’m the only one brave enough to say it? Is it not just lazy to take the easy route and hire a man to speak about male allyship?🤔 ❓In what instances do you think it’s entirely reasonable and appropriate to talk ‘about’ women without women leading the conversation? (Genuine question as I struggle to put myself entirely in a man’s shoes - notice what I did there?) Can you share the great women you know who could speak about male allyship to male audiences, or great double acts who specifically work together… Maybe I’ll get cancelled but maybe I’ll encourage you to think about whether there’s a woman in your network who can speak to men about allyship. #ShareTheStage #Allyship

In our latest edition of #BigBoldConversations – the Podcast we explore the sensitivities of Transgender Awareness as we welcome our guest Katie Neeves FRSA. Katie came out publicly as #Transgender in 2018 after living for 48 years as a man, risking her livelihood and reputation as a top UK photographer in the process. Katie formed Cool2bTrans to support and inspire other trans people and to educate everyone else about trans people, by showing them that trans people are just ordinary people who want to be happy.  Katie shares her journey of becoming her true self, and shines a light on some of the challenges trans people face in society particularly in the workplace and how we can be an ally. Listen in now!
