About us

The Association for Science and Discovery Centres (ASDC) is the national charity that brings together the UK’s major science engagement organisations to play a strategic role in the nation’s engagement with science. Within our network are over 50 of the nation’s largest publicly accessible science centres, discovery centres, science museums and scientific bodies. Science and Discovery Centres are embedded in the heart of their communities in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. They have long-term partnerships with communities, schools and families as well as local institutions such as universities, industry and business, local government and the media. ASDC's STEM projects and programmes leverage this national infrastructure, expertise and investment offering families and the wider public across the UK unusual and exciting opportunities to discover, discuss, question and explore the latest science, engineering and research. Find out more about these programmes here. Every year our members work to encourage more diverse participation in science, engaging with over 25 million people of all ages, genders, backgrounds and abilities. See the full list of ASDC members here. Together, our vision is for a society where science is accessible, inclusive and valued by all as a fundamental part of everyday life.

Today we’ve published the Campaign for Science and Engineering constituency-level analysis of public attitudes to R&D. 👉 https://lnkd.in/e-kEHt-3 We focus on 13 questions that can help R&D advocates to engage with parliamentary candidates on the campaign trail, and then with the new cohort of MPs as they settled into their roles. We’ve used these figures to contact almost 3,000 parliamentary candidates across the UK, to highlight local public appetite for R&D and offer our 'Guide to R&D on the Doorstep' to help candidates build R&D into their campaign. Explore our maps for constituency-by-constituency figures on: How many people would… …like to vote for someone who will support R&D in the UK …like more R&D investment and facilities in their local area …like there to be new R&D jobs in their area …like politicians to embrace long-term thinking and solutions How many people would support their MP… …campaigning for more R&D jobs to be created in the area …campaigning for a proposed research centre to be built in their constituency …campaigning for a new research centre to be built on their nearest high street …campaigning for businesses to set up a research centre in the area …creating a new scheme for local school children to visit research centres …campaigning for their nearest NHS hospital to host more clinical trials …engaging with the leaders of local R&D organisations such as universities and businesses …speaking in Parliament about the importance of R&D …voting in Parliament in favour of decisions that will support R&D in the UK We hope these figures will help R&D advocates demonstrate that the public view R&D as an asset to their community, and would like to see their next MP pursue R&D as a local political priority.

  • Thank you to our June Members' Forum speakers Amy Harrison-Seales from The Royal Society and Scott Billings from the Oxford University Museum Of Natural History who shared examples of transforming collections into compelling stories. Amy shared how the Royal Society’s ‘Places of Science’ grant scheme has allowed small museums to run projects that tell stories of science that directly relate to their community, engaging people through their local history. Scott gave us a behind the scenes walkthrough of how the Oxford University Museum of Natural History curated a new exhibit space, including insights on how to find creativity in the limitations that working in a historical building brings, and some beautiful images of their redesigned exhibits and spaces. Thanks again to both Amy and Scott, and to everyone who attended - it was fantastic to see lots of our members as well as attendees from the Museums Association.
