Liberal International (LI) is the world federation of over 100 liberal and progressive democratic political parties. LI was founded in 1947 to strengthen liberal protection from totalitarianism and communism. It has since become the pre-eminent network for promoting liberalism, individual freedom, human rights, the rule of law, tolerance, equality of opportunity, social justice, free trade and a market economy.

The emotional toll is profound, yet refugees continue to hope, dream, and strive for a better future. They remind us of the shared humanity that connects us all.

With the start of the European Championship, the issue of LGBT inclusivity in football, in particular men’s football, remains underaddressed. Despite the FA's 2016 guidance aimed at reducing transphobia, the gender binary remains ingrained in professional sports. Recent decisions by FIFA, including hosting tournaments in Russia and Qatar—countries known for anti-LGBTQIA+ stances—further underscore the contradictions within the sport's global governance. What a night! Such a great honor to be awarded with the Liberal International highest political honour Hans van Baalen Medal of Liberalism in my new home town of Washington DC at National Democratic Institute (NDI) surrounded by my liberal family represented by Senator Eggleton from Canada, my democracy family represented by the NDI Chair Senator Daschle, NDI President Tamara Cofman Wittes, NDI board, NDI staff, NDI Parties Team, former NDI President Ken Wollack and Vice-President Shari Bryan that once upon a time introduced me to NDI, my home country of Sweden Embassy of Sweden in USA represented by Ambassador Urban Ahlin and of course my dear husband Mark Klamberg and our lovely daughters Stella and Olivia. I’m deeply honored and I promise that I will continue to fight for liberal values the rest of my life - especially the most important one of them all democracy!

NDI’s Birgitta Ohlsson awarded LI’s Hans van Baalen Medal of Liberalism On behalf of the LI bureau, LI Vice President Art Eggleton has presented our highest political honour to Birgitta Ohlsson at a ceremony in Washington DC. In the presence of the National Democratic Institute (NDI) leadership and former House speaker Tom Daschle, LI recognised Birgitta’s lifetime’s work to advance liberalism. From the Swedish liberal youth, as minister for European affairs, and today as the director of the NDI’s political parties team, Birgitta has worked on the international stage and across party lines to promote liberal-democratic values globally. We have been honoured to have Birgitta stand with us on the front line of the Hong Kong Umbrella Movement protests in 2014 and take a leading role in celebrating our 75th anniversary at our congress in Sofia in 2022. Her work, and our partnership with NDI, is crucial in advancing our shared values around the world.
