Understand how your Pixel battery works

Most phones and tablets, including Pixel phones, use rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Factors such as ambient temperature and device usage contribute to a decrease of your battery’s health. This results in shorter battery runtime or a decreased ability to deliver power in extreme temperatures. Eventually, lithium-ion batteries reach the end of their lifespan and need to be replaced.

When charged as recommended, your Pixel phone’s battery is designed to keep at least 80% of its initial capacity up to a certain number of charge cycles. Capacity is shown by the battery’s fuel gauge, which adapts to your battery’s remaining capacity over time. The number of charge cycles varies and depends on phone model. Your device’s actual lifespan depends on usage patterns and other factors.

Charge cycles for Pixel phone:

  • Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro, including Pixel Fold: Should retain up to 80% capacity for about 800 charge cycles.
  • Pixel 8a and later: Should retain up to 80% capacity for about 1000 charge cycles.

Your Pixel battery’s cycle count is the number of times the battery has completed a full discharge and recharge of the battery, including partial discharges. For example, if you used your Pixel from 100% charge to 50% charge and then recharged it to 100%, this would be calculated as 0.5 cycles.

Tip: Charge your Pixel phone in a cool place (about 25℃ or 78℉) with a compatible USB-C PD or PPS charger. Do not use it while it charges.

To check your phone’s cycle count on Pixel 8a and later:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap About phone and then Battery information.

Maximize your battery health

To help maximize the lifespan of your Pixel battery:

Replace your battery

When you replace your old battery, it improves your phone’s performance in cold or warm ambient temperatures, increases runtime, and may help prolong your Pixel phone’s useful life.

If you notice a decrease in your phone’s runtime or your battery reaches the cycle charge count, we recommend that you replace your battery. Visit Pixel’s support page for your available options.

Manage devices with a swollen battery

A swollen battery doesn’t typically present a safety hazard provided you exercise extra caution. They can, however, cause liquids or dust to enter the device more easily. Exposed batteries are more susceptible to accidental damage (e.g. by puncture) and can potentially cause the battery to overheat and cause injury. Here are some best practices if you have a swollen battery.

Do Do not
  • Retrieve personal data or perform a factory reset to “wipe” device data before you return or recycle the device.
  • Allow your device battery to completely discharge. To do this, place the device on a table or countertop and let it sit, unused, for several days until the battery naturally drains.
  • If needed, reach out to Google customer support for further guidance.
  • Try to “press down” or force the cover glass or back cover into the phone.
  • Try to pry open the enclosure.
  • Try to remove the swollen battery from the device.
  • Attempt to repair or fix your swollen battery or dissemble your device by yourself.
