Fix mobile connectivity issues

If you can’t make or receive calls or have problems with mobile data, try the steps below.

Confirm 5G compatibility

Important: Pixel phones work with all major carriers. But not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on all 5G networks. Check with your carrier to make sure your phone works on its 5G network. See a list of certified carriers.

Both your phone model and your carrier network determine the kind of 5G service you need. In the US, some Pixel 4a (5G) phones are made specifically for use with Verizon. Learn which Pixel phone models can work with which kinds of 5G.

Know when you're on 5G

Fix mobile data issues

Check mobile data settings
  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.

You should find your carrier’s name here. Make sure “Use SIM” is on.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  3. Tap your carrier’s name.
  4. Turn on Mobile data.

To turn off airplane mode:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet.
  3. Turn off airplane mode.
Check network type

Important: For some countries, options displayed under the preferred network type may vary.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  3. Select your carrier.
  4. Select your preferred network type (based on carrier availability):
    • 5G (recommended)
    • 2G
    • 3G
    • LTE
Check signal strength

To make sure you’re connected to your mobile network, turn off Wi-Fi.

  1. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then Internet.
  2. Turn off Wi-Fi.
    • On the top right corner of your Pixel, there should be a triangle icon that indicates the network signal strength. The more filled in the triangle is, the more signal strength your device has.
    • If you have little to no signal, try switching the location.
    • You can also contact your carrier to check how the coverage is in your area.

Fix SIM card issues

Make sure your SIM is activated and inserted correctly
  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  3. Select your carrier.
    • If you already have a SIM, but it’s inactive, click SIM and turn on Use SIM.
    • If your carrier name is in gray and there is the message “No SIM,” then you either don’t have a SIM or your SIM is inactive. To check, go to Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  4. If you don’t have a SIM activated yet, you can insert a physical SIM or download a SIM (based on carrier availability).
Check SIM installation
  1. Insert your SIM ejection tool or small paperclip into the SIM card tray hole.
  2. Firmly but gently push until the tray pops out.
  3. Remove the tray and take out the SIM card.
  4. Inspect the SIM card.
    • If the SIM card is damaged or bent: Contact your carrier for a replacement SIM card.
    • If you notice any dirt or dust: Wipe the SIM card with a microfiber cloth.
  5. Once the SIM card is clean and intact, put it back into the phone.

Try another SIM card

If you have another SIM card, you can try to install it into your Pixel.

  • Tip: If the issue persists and you have another phone, install the SIM card into the other phone to see if the issue is with the SIM card.

Fix Wi-Fi issues

Check Wi-Fi calling
  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then Network & Internet and then SIMs.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi calling.
  4. Turn on or off Use Wi-Fi calling.
  5. Place a test call.

When Wi-Fi calling is on, your phone can route calls via Wi-Fi networks or your carrier’s network based on your preference or signal strength. Before you turn on Wi-Fi calling, check with your carrier for fees and other details.

Check Bluetooth with other devices

To turn off Bluetooth:

  1. Swipe down to open the notifications menu.
  2. Tap Bluetooth off if it’s on.

Other steps to try

Check contact settings

Find whether a contact is blocked or being routed to voicemail.

  1. Open your Phone app .
  2. Tap a contact.
  3. Scroll to “Contact settings.”
  4. Check if your contact is blocked.
    • If your contact is blocked, tap Unblock numbers.
  5. Check if the “Send to voicemail” is turned on.
    • If it's turned on, turn off Send to voicemail.
Check obstructions

To check obstructions, remove the phone case if you have one.

Shut down active processes
  1. Power off the phone.
    • Tip: Do not select restart.
  2. Wait for 30 seconds, then turn the phone on .
  3. Test the phone.

Tip: You can also switch the airplane mode on and off to shut down the active processes.

Reset all network settings

To reset all mobile network settings:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Settings and then System and then Reset options and then Reset mobile network settings.

To reset Bluetooth and WiFi settings:

Important: This option deletes your saved Wi-Fi connections.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Reset options and then Reset Bluetooth & Wi-Fi.

If these steps don’t work, contact your carrier to check for any outages in your area and confirm that nothing has changed with your data plan.

What information is shared with Google when you troubleshoot mobile connection

You can troubleshoot on your device when you go to Settings and then Network & internet and then Troubleshoot mobile connection.

If you share device and connectivity information with Google, your device can send info like:

  • Your account information.
  • Your device IMEI.
  • The model name of your device, like Pixel 8 or Pixel 8 Pro.
  • Connectivity flags.
  • Connectivity logs like the number of dropped calls, MMS and SMS failures, and call answer latency.
