How Google sources and uses information in local listings

To provide users with the most complete and up-to-date information about places, Google displays local listings (including business listings) on Google Search and Google Maps, as well as third-party sites that use Google embeddable widgets or Google Maps Platform. Google may also use local listing information to generate insights and leads for enterprise customers.

Information in local listings is compiled from a variety of sources:

  • Publicly-available information, such as crawled web content (e.g., information from a business’ official website)
  • Licensed data from third parties
  • Users who contribute factual information (such as addresses and phone numbers), and content (such as photos, videos, and reviews), including business owners who claim local listings through Google Business Profile
  • Information based on Google’s interactions with a local place or business

Local listings may include AI summaries, which are compiled using one or more sources of information (e.g., place summaries, reviews summaries, and summaries about specific topics).

Understanding review summaries

Google uses AI to analyze people’s reviews on a place and compile a helpful summary highlighting common sentiment and tips.

Each summary is based on English reviews from the past year and updated weekly to reflect recent opinions. The number of reviews used to compile the summary may be shown.

Review summaries aren't available for all places. This can be due to factors like limited reviews or a lack of consistent themes, among other reasons.

Price ranges on Google Maps and Search provide users an idea of what to expect in terms of the cost of goods or services before they visit a place or establishment. This helps them manage their budget and make informed decisions.

UGC prices from structured questions

We ask users structured questions when they write a review such as “How much did you spend per person?”, to gather data on typical spending. Based on the collected data, we show what the majority of users spend in a place or establishment.

Merchant price range

Merchants can share their price information directly with Google.

View price ranges

  1. On your computer, open Google Maps.
  2. On the map, select a place or establishment you plan to visit.
    • You can also search for a place.
  3. On the left, click Overview.
  4. Scroll to Price per person .
    • Reported by XXX people: This is from UGC. It’s the average price that people spend per head at the place or establishment.
    • Confirmed by business X days ago: This is merchant provided information. It’s the average price the merchant sets at their place or establishment.
