How location tracking works with your Google Fit data

Google Fit can collect your device location data when you’re physically active, to help calculate distance and create a map of your activity in the Google Fit Journal. You can turn location tracking on or off in Google Fit at any time.

How activity maps tracking works
When you turn on automatic tracking or manually track an activity for the first time, Google Fit asks for permission to collect device location data. This helps calculate distance and create a map of your activity in the Google Fit journal. If you enable automatic tracking and give Google Fit permission to collect device location data, Fit can automatically collect this data. Learn more about Automatic Tracking.
How we protect your data

Google Fit provides you analytics, tracking, and activity history. Your Google Fit data is securely stored on Google servers. If you lose or change your device, your data is backed up on Google servers.

Connected apps can't access device location data collected by Google Fit.

You're in control

When you set up Google Fit on your device, you can choose whether to turn on location tracking for automatically tracked activities. You can always turn location tracking on or off in the Google Fit app at any time.

You can also delete your device location data at any time. If you delete a Journal session, the location data for that session is deleted.
