You can use the buttons in the toolbar at the top of a document to:

  • Edit and format the text and paragraph spacing
  • Change the font and background color
  • Bold, italicize, underline, or strikethrough text

These options are also available in the Format menu. To open the Format menu, use the keyboard shortcut:

  • Windows and Chrome OS: Alt + Shift + o
  • Mac OS: Control + Option + o

Tip: Many of these actions have keyboard shortcuts that can be used without the toolbar or menus. Take note of the shortcuts presented with the menu options you use frequently to work more efficiently.

Format paragraphs

Change paragraph spacing
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Edit Edit.
  3. Double-tap the place in your document you want to edit.
  4. Tap Format Format.
  5. Next to "Line spacing," tap - or + to choose the amount of space you want between the lines in the paragraph.
Change paragraph alignment
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Edit Edit.
  3. Double-tap the place in your document you want to edit. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  4. Tap Format Format.
  5. Choose an alignment option.

Format fonts

Bold, italicize, or underline text
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Edit Edit.
  3. Double-tap the place in your document you want to edit. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  4. Tap Format Format.
  5. Choose a format option.
Change font style, size, or color
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open a document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap Edit Edit.
  3. Double-tap the place in your document you want to edit. Move the blue markers to select more text.
  4. Tap Format Format.
  5. In the Text selection, tap Style, Font, Size, Text color, or Highlight color to format your font.
