Get started with Google Workspace Labs

Important: This article refers to Google Workspace Labs, which is an invite only program for users to try new AI features. To check if you have access to Workspace Labs features, open a document in Google Docs. On the left, find Help me write . Learn where you can use Workspace Labs features.

Workspace Labs is a way for you to experiment with AI-assisted capabilities in our products and share feedback. As a Workspace Labs participant, you have early access to test features that may change over time.

In Google Chat

Important: The Gemini in Google Chat side panel is rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet.

You can use artificial intelligence to summarize messages and other tasks.

Collaborate with Gemini in Google Chat

With Gemini in Chat, when you have a space or conversation open, you can:
  • Summarize that space or conversation.
  • Generate a list of action items from that space or conversation.
  • Answer specific questions about that space or conversation.
In Google Docs

You can use artificial intelligence to create documents, write text and other tasks:

  • You can use the "Help me write" prompt in Docs to suggest text based on your prompts. For example:
    • Draft a blog post.
    • Write song lyrics.
    • Rewrite existing text to be more detailed or concise.
  • You can use the Gemini in Google Docs side panel to:
    • Write and refine content in context.
    • Summarize your files from Drive and emails from Gmail.
    • Create images.
    • Get creative ideas.
  • You can use “Help me create” to create an entire structured document including tables, images, formatted headings etc. based on your prompts.
  • To create an image or a cover image for your document with AI, you can use the Help me create an image option.
In Gmail

In Google Slides

In Google Sheets

You can use artificial intelligence to organize and automate manual text processing tasks.

  • You can use the "Help me organize" feature to draft a trip plan or task tracker. Learn how to create tables based on prompts.
  • You can use AI to make manual text processing tasks easier. It automatically detects incomplete column pairs and predicts remaining values. It can finish filling out a feedback categorization column based on existing data. Learn how to use enhanced Smart Fill.
  • You can use the Gemini in Google Sheets side panel to:
    • Summarize a spreadsheet.
    • Create and refine tables.
    • Create formulas.
    • Generate data analysis and insights.
    • Build charts and graphs.
    • Summarize emails from Gmail and files from Drive.

In Google Meet

In Google Drive

You can use the Gemini in Google Drive side panel to:

  • Summarize files.
  • Pull information from files, such as numbers, time, people, instructions and examples.
  • Ask open questions about a topic based on your files.
You can use the Gemini in Google Drive PDF viewer side panel to:
  • Work with a variety of PDFs, including scanned PDFs or long and complex PDFs.
  • Instantly summarize your PDF files.
  • Ask specific questions and get answers about your PDF files.

In Google Vids

Important: Google Vids and new features in Vids are rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet.

With Google Vids, you can create video:

  • Create a video using artificial intelligence by adding a prompt and related documents, use “Help me create.”
  • Use templates to help you get started.
  • Add text, images, and music to your videos.
  • Access growing stock content library with videos, images, GIFs, sound effects and more..
  • Record yourself, your voice, your screen, or any combination of these with the Vids recording studio.
  • Comment and collaborate in real time like you do in Docs, Sheets, and Slides.
  • Download your video as an MP4 or share a link.
In Keep
You can use artificial intelligence to create lists.

In Google Forms

You can use artificial intelligence to create forms.

Troubleshooting issues with Workspace Labs features

If you have trouble accessing Workspace Labs features, try the solutions below:

Turn off Workspace Labs features

Important: To turn off any of the features on Google Workspace Labs you must exit Workspace Labs. If you exit, you will permanently lose access to all Workspace Labs features, and you won’t be able to rejoin Workspace Labs. Learn more about turning off enhanced Smart Fill without exiting Workspace Labs.

To permanently exit Workspace Labs, go to Google Docs, Google Slides, Sheets, Gmail, or Meet.

How to exit from Google Docs, Slides & Sheets
  1. On your computer, open a file on Google DocsSlides, or Sheets.
  2. At the top, go to Tools and then Opt out of Labs Opt out of Labs.
  3. Click Confirm.
How to exit from Gmail
  1. On your computer, go to Gmail.
  2. At the top, click Settings .
  3. In the Labs program notification, click Opt out.
  4. Click Opt out and reload.
How to exit from Meet

To opt out of Workspace Labs:

  1. On your computer, go to Meet.
  2. At the top right, click Settings .
  3. On the left, click Workspace Labs and then Opt out.

Important: This article refers to Vids, a product available for select customers to test in Alpha and users in Google Workspace Labs, which is an invite only program for users to try new AI features. Users with Vids access can invite any user with a Workspace account to find, edit, and collaborate on a video. Workspace Labs is currently available to trusted testers in English and may not be available in your country or region.
