Access Google Assistant on your headphones with Voice Match

You can use Voice Match on your headphones to talk to Google Assistant when you're connected to an Android phone or tablet. You can teach Google Assistant to recognize your voice with Voice Match and then use voice commands to get personal results. You can use Voice Match with your headphones, even if you have it turned off on your phone.

Important: Voice Match isn’t available on all devices. Your device’s instruction manual or packaging can tell you if your headphones support Voice Match.

Turn on Voice Match & teach Google Assistant how to recognize your voice

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app .
  2. Tap your Profile picture or Initials and then Settings and then Google Assistant.
  3. Configure "Hey Google & Voice Match" as you like.

How Voice Match and Google Assistant language settings work

Your Assistant will listen for “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” spoken in an accent similar to your primary Assistant language. For example, if your primary Assistant language is set to Spanish, your Assistant will listen for the "Hey Google" or "OK Google" as it would be spoken with a Spanish accent. Learn how to change your language or use multiple languages.

Important: Voice Match on your headphones might not be available in all Google Assistant languages supported by your phone.

How Voice Match works with multiple Google Assistant devices

If you say “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” while wearing your headphones, Google Assistant will respond in your headphones, even if there is another Google Assistant device nearby, like a smart speaker.

If more than one device responds, check to make sure that you have linked the same Google accounts on your phone and other devices. Learn how to fix issues with Ok Google not working.

If you want to talk to another device while wearing headphones, include the device name while you say your command. For example, you can say "play music on the living room speaker".

If that doesn’t work, you can take your headphones off to say a command to another device.
