Reduce digital distraction with the Google Assistant

The Google Assistant can help you relax before bed and understand how you spend time on your device. You can also manage digital distraction through the Settings app.

Limit interruptions with Google Assistant

To silence calls and notifications, ask Google Assistant to turn on Do Not Disturb.

  • You can control Do Not Disturb on a device connected to your Google Account.
  • You can control Do Not Disturb on speakers, Smart Displays, and Smart Clocks connected to your Google Account and on the same Wi-Fi network.

To control Do Not Disturb on other devices with Google Assistant, you must use Google Assistant in English (US) and turn on Voice Match.

Tip: When you turn on Do Not Disturb for speakers, Smart Displays, and Smart Clocks, you can't broadcast voice messages to those devices or receive Duo calls on your Smart Display.

Note: For now, this only works on Pixel and Android One phones. This feature isn't available in all languages.

Ask how you spend time on your device

  1. On your Android device, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google."
  2. Say or enter a question about how you use your device, like:
    • "How much time did I spend on my phone today?"
    • "How much time did I spend on my phone on Wednesday?"
    • "How much time did I spend on [app] today?"
    • "How much time did I spend on [app] on Saturday?"

Control how much you use an app

  1. On your Android phone, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google."
  2. Say or type an app timer request, like:
    • "Set a [app] timer for 15 minutes."
    • "Set a 30 minute app timer for [app]."

When you reach the time limit you set, the app temporarily pause for the rest of the day. App timers reset each day at midnight.

To use an app after your timer runs out, cancel the timer to unpause the app. Say or enter a phrase like:

  • "Stop [app] timer."
  • "Cancel the timer for [app]."

Get less distracted by your device

You can help yourself to not use your device at certain times, like before you go to sleep.

  1. On your Android device, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google."
  2. Say or enter your request to limit distractions, like:
  • "Start Wind Down now."
  • "Start Wind Down at [time]."
  1. The first time you use Wind Down, you can choose options like:
  • Your start and end times
  • Whether to have your phone’s screen not use color and change to Grayscale
  • Whether to turn on Do Not Disturb
  • When to turn on the Night Light

To turn off Wind Down before the end time, say or enter a phrase like:

  • "Turn off Wind Down."
  • "Cancel Wind Down."
  • "Stop Wind Down."

Turn Do Not Disturb on or off from a different device

You can ask one device with Google Assistant to turn Do Not Disturb on or off on another device. For example, you could:

  • Ask Google Assistant on your Smart Display to silence your phone.
  • Ask Google Assistant on your phone to turn your speaker to Do Not Disturb.

Say "Hey Google," then give a command, like:

  • "Set the kitchen display to Do Not Disturb."
  • "Silence my phone."
  • "Turn off Do Not Disturb on the living room speaker."
  • "Take my phone off silent."

Turn Do Not Disturb on or off for all devices

You can ask one device with Google Assistant to turn Do Not Disturb on or off for all of your devices.

Say "Hey Google," then give a command, like:

  • "Set all devices to Do Not Disturb."
  • "Silence all devices."
  • "Turn off Do Not Disturb on all devices."
