Make Duo calls on your speakers & Smart Displays

You can make and receive Duo calls on your speakers and Smart Displays if you have Google Duo set up.

Important: Google no longer provides software updates for these third-party Smart Displays: Lenovo Smart Display (7", 8" & 10"), JBL Link View and LG Xboom AI ThinQ WK9 Smart Display. This could impact the quality of video calls and meetings.

Set up Duo calling

Important: Before you follow these steps and if you’re already using the Duo app, use your Duo phone number to connect your Google Account.

On a speaker
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home Home.
  3. Touch and hold your speaker.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings Settings and then Communication and then Duo calling.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.
On a Smart Display
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app Google Home.
  2. At the bottom, tap Home Home.
  3. Touch and hold your Smart Display.
  4. At the top right, tap Device settings Settings and then Voice & video calls and then Duo video calling.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Make a call

You can make Duo calls with your voice. On Smart Displays, you can also use your screen.

Important: To call your contacts, you must turn on personal results.
On a speaker
To call someone, say “Hey Google, call [contact] on Duo."
On a Smart Display

Call someone

To start a call, say “Hey Google,” then:

  • “Call [contact] on Duo”
  • Or, "Video call [contact]"

Call a group

Important: This feature is available in English only.

You can make or receive calls with a group on a Smart Display. Learn how to set up a group.

To start a call:

  1. Say “Hey Google, start a group call."
  2. On the screen, tap a group.

Use call controls

On a speaker

Answer or decline a call

Say “Answer the call” or “Decline the call.”

End a call

Say “End the call” or “Hang up.”

On a Smart Display

Answer or decline a call

  • Say "Answer the call" or tap Answer.
  • Say "Decline the call" or tap Decline.

End a call

  • Say "End the call" or "Hang up."
  • Tap End call.

Hide contact names on Smart Displays

When someone calls your Smart Display and you have personal results turned on, your Smart Display shows their name from your Google Contacts. To hide contact names on this device, turn off personal results.

When you turn off personal results:

  • Google Assistant doesn’t use your Google Contacts.
  • You get a phone number or email on your screen instead of a contact name.
  • You can’t start a call with a contact name like “Call Maria.”

  1. On your phone, open the Google Assistant app Assistant.
  2. Say "Hey Google,” then “Video call [Smart Display name]” or "Video call home."
