Get search insights

The Insights page helps you identify top and trending Google searches for your business so you can understand what your audience is looking for, and tailor your ads accordingly.

View the Insights page

  1. Sign in to Ads Creative Studio.
  2. In the page menu, click Insights.

By default you'll see the most popular searches around the globe for the last 28 days. You can use filters to change the time period, limit insights to a region or language, or focus on searches in a specific category.

Types of search insights you can see

The Insights page displays the following information on separate cards:

Top searches overall

This card lists the most popular searches in the selected time period. For each search, you see a trend graph, the indexed volume, and the change in total volume.

  • Click Open in full to see more categories per page.
  • Click the back arrow to return to the main Insights page.

What is indexed volume?

The indexed volume represents the relative volume of searches on a scale of 0 to 100. 100 is the peak popularity during the time period for the selected region, 50 is half that volume, and 0 indicates that there isn't enough data.

How is the change calculated?

The "Change" column shows the difference in the total search query volume for the selected time period and the preceding time period of the same length, displayed as a percentage. For example, if "Past 7 days" is selected and the query volume for the past week is twice the volume for the week before, the change is displayed as "+100%".

Trending searches

This card lists the searches whose popularity increased the most in the selected time period when compared to the previous period of the same length. For each search, you see a trend graph, the indexed volume, and the change in total volume.

  • Click Open in full to see more searches per page.
  • Click the back arrow to return to the main Insights page.

Interest over time

When you enter a search category, this card displays a graph of search interest in that category during the selected time period.

  • Hover your cursor over a data point in the graph to see the indexed volume as well as the year-over-year (YoY) and month-over-month (MoM) rate of change.
  • Click Open in full for a larger view of the graph.
  • Click the back arrow to return to the main Insights page.

Interest by region

When you enter a search category, this card displays a map of the locations with the most searches in the category during the selected time period. Darker blue regions on the map are regions with a higher indexed volume.

  • Hover your cursor over a specific region in the map to see the indexed volume there.
  • Click the List and Map icons to switch between the list and map views.
  • Click Open in full to see a higher-resolution map and the list at the same time.

Filters

You can apply the following filters to your search insights:

The currently applied filters are displayed in the search bar and next to the Filter icon .

Search category

Search categories are auto-generated groupings of search terms related to products and services. Start typing in the search bar to see a list of matching categories to select from. Selecting a search category lets you see interest in the category over time and by region.

Clear the search category by clicking Dismiss in the search bar.

Region

You can limit your insights to searches in a single region by making a selection from the region dropdown.

Select Global for insights across all regions.

Language

If you want to limit your insights to searches made by users of a specific language, select that language from the language dropdown. Language is determined by a search user's language settings rather than by the language of the search query, so you may see searches in more than one language even when this filter is applied.

Select All languages for insights across all languages.

Time period

You can select from the following time periods for your search insights from the date range dropdown:

  • Past 7 days
  • Past 28 days
  • Past 90 days
  • Past 1 year
  • Past 2 years

Sometimes data may not be available for the full time period selected. If results are shown for a shorter time period, the card will display the start date of that period.

Data freshness and availability

Data on the Insights page is updated once a day.

You may see the message "Not enough data to show results" on a card when there isn't sufficient search query data for your specified filters.
