Karolina Pawlikowska’s passion for programming took her from Warsaw to Oslo, London, Amsterdam, and now Sydney – the headquarters of graphic-design app Canva. We talked to Pawlikowska about her lifelong love for tech and being a woman in a male-dominated field.

Q: What inspired you to become a Software Engineer??

I've always loved sci-fi books and movies since I was little. I just knew that whatever I ended up doing with my life it would have something to do with computers. Programming quickly became my favorite creative outlet – I started producing websites and web apps when I was 11 – mainly to support or enhance my other passions, like drawing or making uzzle games for my friends.

Q: What has your career path been like, and how has being a woman shaped your journey?

I discovered Android in high school and it was love at first sight. I took up computer science in university, and the apps I created came in handy when it was time for me to look for a job. Being a female programmer wasn't easy, as there was a lot of prejudice. But I was fortunate to be given an opportunity to attend an Android coding camp for girls in London, and later a European Women in Tech event in Amsterdam, where I was inspired by numerous respected, successful female leaders. I knew then and there that it was worth building a career in software engineering.

Q: Looking back, what advice would you give a young Karolina, just starting her career?

Believe in yourself. Spend time building a support group of people who believe in your dreams and, better yet, who share similar interests so you can bounce ideas and collaborate.

Q: In the spirit of celebrating women, who is one woman who has inspired you?

She might not be a programmer, but to me, Frida Kahlo embodies perseverance, resilience, and drive. She knew what she wanted and she was unstoppable on her way to getting it, regardless of naysayers or the number of obstacles that stood in her way – she was the real director of her life.
