International Access to Information Day: 28 September

Each year, International Access to Information Day (IAID) provides an important opportunity to highlight the importance of the community’s right to access government-held information.

We hope you’ll help us mark the day by highlighting it within your agency.

You can find resources on the IAID page of our website, where you can also download this range of visual assets for the day. We also have an IAID toolkit you can use, which includes information about the day that you can use and adapt for your agency.

#AccessToInfoDay is also an opportunity to acknowledge the important role that government agencies play in managing information for public purposes.

Your work shaping these systems as FOI practitioners supports the effective management of government-held information, contributing to a culture of openness. Your role is essential to our democracy.

This year’s UNESCO theme for the day is the importance of the online space for access to information.

If you are marking Access to Information Day in your agency, we would love to hear what you have planned. You can contact us at [email protected] with any updates or questions.

Update: Commencement of 2023 Information Publication Scheme (IPS) Review

Section 9(1) of the FOI Act requires Australian government agencies, in conjunction with the Australian Information Commissioner, to complete a review of their IPS every 5 years.
Our work on the review is already underway, with the OAIC engaging external service provider, ORIMA Research, to assist with the project.

In working with agencies to complete this review, the OAIC requires agencies to complete a detailed online survey questionnaire between 20 September and 18 October 2023.
ORIMA Research will contact primary FOI Contact Officer(s) soon with further details about the survey. The survey period commences on 20 September 2023 and closes on 18 October 2023.

During this time, the OAIC will hold two information workshops providing agencies an opportunity to learn and ask questions about the survey.

Those agencies interested in attending a workshop can register their interest for one of the two sessions via the following links: Completion and submission of the survey will ensure agencies compliance with the obligations under s 9 of the FOI Act.

The OAIC encourages agencies' to review the revised Part 13 of the FOI Guidelines: Information Publication Scheme (v 1.5; July 2023).
