The European Union has proposed a methodology for calculating and verifying the carbon footprint of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, significantly advancing regulatory standards to reduce EVs' environmental impact. While this approach increases transparency and comparability across the EU, it poses challenges for manufacturers in regions with higher carbon-intensity power grids, like China. This could potentially lead to higher operational costs but also encourage innovation in clean energy solutions. Meet our experts Craig Jamieson Duo Fu Thomas Engrav at the #Batteryshow on 18-19 June in Stuttgart and learn more. #batteries #batterymetals #batterymanufacturing #batteryrecycling #batterysupplychain #batterymarket #energy #rystadenergy

The battery energy storage system (BESS) sector had a landmark year in 2023, with new capacity doubling the 2022 total. The industry is poised for another record-breaking year in 2024, with an anticipated increase exceeding 130 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of added capacity, bringing global operational BESS capacity to more than 330 GWh. Read our special insight from Sepehr Soltani, BESS Analyst on our Renewables & Power team, to learn more about the future expansion of the sector. https://lnkd.in/dn-DGefF #batterystorage #energystoragesystems #EnergyTransition

Heightened military activity and sanctions are yet to fully put the global energy supply chain to the test. Energy capital expenditure has been significantly impacted by increased geopolitical tensions, especially the procurement activities. Upstream investments, for example, have dropped 40% since 2014, to $600 billion. This has significantly impacted certain categories shared with the oil and gas sector where the defense industry has become a major buyer. Read our article to better understand the impact on procurement categories and suppliers: https://lnkd.in/dtawqzUU #oilandgas #supplychain #upstream

Chart of the week: the battery market is charging ahead despite oversupply, with global production projected to exceed 2.5 terawatt-hours (TWh) by 2026, driven by ambitious plans from manufacturers. In 2023, production surpassed 1,100 GWh, with more than 70% of demand from electric vehicles (EVs), and prices dropped by 50%, spurring rapid growth. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are pivotal in the energy transition, particularly in EVs and energy storage systems (ESS), facing significant price competition and industry shifts in 2024. Despite these challenges, long-term stability through healthy competition is essential, with 2024 production expected to exceed 1,500 GWh, keeping the industry in oversupply. The value-chain emissions of liquified natural gas (LNG) are lower on average than for coal-fired power generation, even when the fuel is shipped over long distances, according to new Rystad Energy research. Natural gas that is produced and liquified in the US and shipped to Asia on return journeys of about 23,000 miles could emit up to 50% less than even the cleanest coal power plants. However, there are significant variations between US LNG sources, coal sources and types, and power plants, as well as uncertainties regarding methane emissions through both value chains. Last year was a significant one for the renewable energy industry, with a 40% increase in global installed capacity. Rystad Energy forecasts that renewables will continue to grow robustly, with solar PV leading the charge. While solar dominated the renewable expansion, battery storage technologies experienced the most substantial percentage growth, with a 250% year-on-year increase. Onshore wind also saw significant progress, albeit at a slower rate than solar, with a 20% year-on-year increase in installations.
