Early Hours can mean a few different things: Are you winding down after being up all night, or are you just rising to meet the sun? Often the artists helming Apple Music's exclusive Early Hours DJ mix series cater to both frames of mind. Such was the case for Berlin's D.Dan, who crafted this month’s downtempo journey with tracks he has “a personal relationship with”. “These songs have grown alongside me through moments and memories, and are selections I keep returning to,” he says. For D.Dan, the key to a good downtempo mix is balance: “It shouldn’t ever feel like too much or too little for too long—you have to find the right mix and pacing between drifting ambient sections that don’t stretch out too much, and more traditionally structured songs that aren’t overstimulating or in your face.” He thinks about these qualities a lot, especially while he’s on the road. He chose the tracks included here from a personal playlist he keeps while he’s touring called “High Speed Calm Air”. The title was a way to capture those “candid moments after intense nights where everything feels like it’s moving so fast that, afterwards, I want to listen to music that’s recentring and grounding,” he says. “These songs help me process, integrate and cherish these experiences and emotions—and put me in the right state of mind.”
