Today’s Country

Carly Pearce’s new album hummingbird, out now, is the acclaimed singer-songwriter’s most vulnerable work yet, and that’s saying something. Pearce has long been known for revealing, confessional lyrics, typically served up as what she describes to Apple Music as “sad songs and sass”. On the standout “truck on fire”, Pearce finds the sweet spot between heartache and revenge, getting the last word on a good-for-nothing lover à la Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”. Pearce co-wrote the song with Justin Ebach and Lady A’s Charles Kelley, and she tells Apple Music, “I got to really let loose with that [song]. I really wanted to write something that gave girls an anthem to just feel powerful. Don’t we all have all these crazy dreams in our head, of burning down the thing that [the] human that hurt us loves the most?” This playlist tracks what’s happening from the heart of the country scene to its outer edges. Check back here early and often, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
