Pride 2024 (DJ Mix)

“I wanted this mix to feel unapologetically Brown, unapologetically Black, unapologetically Indigenous, unapologetically queer and unapologetically trans,” Lady Shaka tells Apple Music, setting the bar high for her Pride DJ mix. The UK-based, Aotearoa New Zealand-born artist of Māori descent dedicates her mix to “the trans women who have come before me and the trans women who are yet to come. I honour Georgina Beyer, the now-passed trans Māori icon—and the first trans member of parliament in the world. Kia au to moe (rest in peace).” Listen out for her debut single “E Tu” on the mix. “For me as an Indigenous woman, there is nothing like playing music in queer spaces in my language, te reo Māori (the language),” she says. “I dedicate this Pride to all my queer and trans Indigenous whānau (family), tangata Māori (Māori people), tangata moana (people of the ocean) and tangata whenua (people of the land).”
