Why Cleaning Your Range Hood Should Be on Your To-Do List

It’s not broken or worn out—it just needs to be cleaned

My range hood after three intense weeks of daily cooking | All photos by the author. Do not reuse without permission.

Let’s play a little game: Name one — just one — TV chef, cookbook author, or food blogger who doesn’t wax poetic about the joys of cooking and the deliciousness of the food they teach you to make. Don’t worry, I’ll wait …

Difficult, isn’t it? OK, let’s try something else. Try to name even one celebrity who’s as eager to discuss kitchen cleanup as they are to sing the praises of a perfectly cooked steak. Hey, I never said this game would be easy!

It’s like the media — with its flashy shows and glossy cookbooks — wants to make everything in the kitchen seem rosier than it actually is. No wonder so many people hate cooking; they’re being sold lies (or at least partial truths).

Anyway, the range hood in my kitchen got greasy and grimy once again, and I thought about all of this while cleaning it. Seeing as nobody talks or writes about these things, I decided to pour myself another cup of coffee and put together a story about it before my afternoon nap. So here it is.
