The Arizona Supreme Court delays implementation of 1864 abortion ban

The Arizona Supreme Court granted a request to delay the enforcement of the state’s 1864 near-total abortion ban. Democratic Attorney General Kris Mayes requested an additional 90-day delay before the ban could be enforced. Although Governor Katie Hobbs signed a repeal of the ban, it cannot take effect until the legislative session ends. The enforcement date could be pushed back to late October. Currently, the state operates under a 15-week abortion ban with limited exceptions. A coalition is working on a constitutional amendment to protect abortion rights in the state. Roe v. Wade’s overturn has pushed abortion rights onto the ballot in several states.
