First recipient of genetically modified pig kidney transplant passes away

Richard “Rick” Slayman, the first person to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, has passed away nearly two months after the surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. The hospital confirmed that his death was not a result of the transplant, and they praised Slayman for his willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation. The surgery was a significant milestone in addressing organ shortages for transplants, aiming to prevent rejection of animal organs in the human body. Slayman’s family expressed gratitude for the additional time they had with him after the transplant, highlighting his dedication and optimism in providing hope for others in need of transplants.
