Le Corbusier Traditionally known as the French Riviera, a more precise translation would be the “Blue Riviera ”, a place of natural enchantment, dominated by the sparkling azure of the sea, the dazzling, warm light on the streets overlooking the water, and the very mild climate. These characteristics have seduced artists such as Signac, Matisse, Picasso, Braque, Léger, and Calder. Not even Le Corbusier, who designed the Cabanon - a micro-architecture overlooking the sea - was immune to the magnetic charm of the French Riviera as a restorative refuge in which to nourish his creativity. The Cabanon as a place of creativity Radical in its simple elegance, the Cabanon is a small cabin whose interior, along with the furnishings, was rebuilt in 2006 by #Cassina as a travelling exhibition. Among the furniture in the Cabanon, the LC14 Tabouret Cabanon, Roquebrune-Cap-Martin 1952 stands out as an elegantly spartan seat, thanks to the dovetail joints that emphasise the connections between the solid chestnut tops. A stool more similar to a found object than to a process of design, it reminds one of beloved “objets trouvés”, like the wooden whisky crates Le Corbusier discovered washed up on the shore and used as stools in the cabin. A seaside microcosm that inspired the genius of Le Corbusier. Credits: Le Corbusier in his cabanon in Roquebrune Cap-Martin 1951/1952. © Photograph Lucien Hervé FLC/ADAGP #Tabouret #LeCorbusier

The Galaxy lamp by Charles and Ray Eames wins an Interior Design 2024 NYCxDESIGN Award #Cassina is pleased to announce that the Galaxy lamp by Charles and Ray Eames won the 2024 edition of the Interior Design NYCxDESIGN Award. This icon from the Cassina Lighting Collection distinguished itself as a winner in the ‘Iconic Products’ category. First presented at “An Exhibition for Modern Living” at Detroit Institute of Arts in 1949, this model was made in the prototype shop at the Eames Office from automotive components and different sized brass tubes, inserted into a sphere made from a wooden ball. Despite the considerable interest it received, Galaxy has never been mass-produced before becoming part of the Cassina 2024 Lighting Collection. Cassina has developed this burst of light for serial production in close collaboration with the Eames Office and through in-depth research work, implementing modern technologies and materials while still safeguarding the research process conducted by the two designers. The fascinating Casa Albini in Gallura The “five principles” of Franco Albini find their home in northern Sardinia, in the breathtaking region of Gallura, where Casa Albini stands as a meeting point between Fondazione Albini, committed to preserving the legacy of the Milanese architect, and the Albini Academy, focused on training future architects in the "Albini method": breaking down, finding the core essence, recomposing in a new form, verifying and acting for social responsibility. Casa Albini hosts re-editions of Franco Albini's works, donated by companies like #Cassina, which reflect his connection with nature. The interiors are enriched by re-editions of furniture by Albini and Franca Helg. Among these are the Luisa chair, awarded the Compasso d'Oro in 1955 and re-edited by Cassina in 2008; the Infinito Wall bookcase, produced in 1956 and re-edited by Cassina in 2008; and the Radio Cristallo from 1938, re-edited by Cassina in 2021, all of which contribute to the interior atmosphere. Casa Albini is not just a place, but a true incubator of ideas, a talent accelerator and an innovation laboratory immersed in the natural setting of Gallura. #casaalbini #fondazionefrancoalbini Profile Link: Fondazione Franco Albini

Perhaps because Vico Magistretti hailed from a long line of Milanese architects, he was renowned for his sophisticated approach to design, despite his penchant for saying, "I love creating essential things that seem like nothing"; a minimalist approach that translated complexity into simplicity. This philosophy he gifted to #Cassina as well, crafting numerous prestigious design pieces, including the Maralunga sofa. Maralunga Sofa: A Never-ending Tale It was the fabulous 70s, when the ABBA, triumphed at the Eurovision Song Contest, overwhelming everyone with the hit of "Waterloo". All except one: Vico Magistretti, who instead, with the typical tireless persistence of someone who wants to achieve concrete results, worked tirelessly to create a comfortable sofa with a strong personality. Moreover, as Jean Cocteau said, “Genius is the extreme tip of practical sense”. Thus, in 1973, the Maralunga sofa was born. An international best-seller, widely imitated. To celebrate the natural longevity of this piece, Cassina, in 2014, on its 40th anniversary, imparted a more contemporary look to this design classic by adding removable fabric upholstery. The Anecdote You Might Not Know A burst of passion can ignite creativity, as happened between Cesare Cassina and Vico Magistretti. Legend has it that it was Cassina himself who literally threw a punch at the prototype presented by Magistretti. That energetic punch broke the imperfect backrest and sparked instant illumination in Vico's mind: "Right, great, now it looks perfect just like that.", he said. Upon hearing that, Cesare Cassina, too, predicted the sofa's timeless success, saying: "We will sell many of them." Philippe STARCK and #Cassina 30th anniversary: the dream continues Philippe Starck has always been a dreamer: “At night, when I turn out my light, I say to my wife: ‘OK, I'm off to work.’ Because every second, I am transported to worlds that do not exist, I see things that do not exist, I see incredible inventions, I see qualities of light that do not exist. I speak languages with people I have never met before, and it is incredible. When I have ideas in the daytime, perhaps it is because of these dreams.” The visionary French-born creator, with timeless and poetical creativity has imagined an impressive number of elegant pieces for Cassina – from the first collection of beds in 1994 to such innovative products as the L.W.S. Lazy Working Sofa and the Privé collection. Followed by many others in subsequent years. Starck’s conceptual approach is based on inventiveness, rebellion and humour but also technological research to always, maintaining a human, poetic connection that is in harmony with nature. Constantly experimenting with everything from ready-made concepts to futuristic visions. For the 30th anniversary of its collaboration with Philippe Starck, Cassina celebrates the prolific creator with the launch of the new "Somewhere El-S” bedroom collection that introduces the “Volage Ex-S Night Wood” bed. 20 years of The Charlotte Perriand Collection by #Cassina When Charlotte Perriand spoke the phrase, "The object is not neutral. It has a relationship with man and this has to be taken into account", she was probably, without realizing it, anticipating what neuroscience would highlight in the years to come: the interaction between mind and object. Undisputed protagonist of the history of design, Charlotte Perriand defined an extremely innovative “art de vivre et d’habiter", in stark contrast to the traditional design codes of the time. Perriand rightfully belongs to that cultural avant-garde which, starting from the early 20th century, has promoted a profound renewal of the aesthetic values of interior design and has given rise to a truly modern sensitivity for everyday life. Twenty years have passed since Cassina began its collaboration with this talented design pioneer, with the collection that has become part of #iMaestriCollection. Her attention to gesture, to space, to free modularity, to the human being immersed in a context of sensorial and sensual habitability, has made history. The rest is legend. For the 20th anniversary of the Charlotte Perriand Collection, Cassina celebrates this important milestone by paying homage to the work of this versatile designer with an exclusive selection of furnishings never produced in series and new versions of icons already present in the catalogue.
