Blocking Users

What Blocking Accomplishes

What happens when you block someone on Tumblr? Users that you have blocked will not be able to:

If you try to view a blog that you’ve blocked on Tumblr, you’ll see a message letting you know that you’ve blocked the blog.

How to Block

If you receive unwanted messages, reblogs, or followers, you can block the blogs. You can do so from several places within Tumblr.

To block a user via the dashboard:

  1. Open the user’s blog by clicking or tapping on their avatar.
  2. Open the meatballs menu (●●●), then select “Block.”

You can also use the meatballs menu on any post in your dashboard to block a blog.

To block a user via your blog settings page on the web:

  1. Scroll down and click the pencil to edit your blocked users.
  2. Type in the user that you want to block.

To block a user via a post’s notes on the web:

  1. Hover over a reply or reblog caption.
  2. Click the three dots that appear, which will reveal the block option.

To block a user via a chat/DM:

  1. Click or tap the three dots at the top of the screen.
  2. Select “Block.”

To block a user via your Inbox:

  1. Tap the three dots on the ask or submission.
  2. Select “Block.”
  3. On web and iOS, the three dots will be at the top right corner of the message. On Android, it will be at the bottom of the message.

To block a user via the list of your blog’s followers:

  1. Tap the three dots to the right of the username you’d like to block.
  2. Choose “Block.”

To block a user via a push notification (for follows, mentions, or messages):

  1. On iPhones with 3D Touch, hard-press the notification. On older iPhones, swipe the notification over to the left and tap the “View” button. On Android phones, swipe down on the notification.
  2. Select “Block”.

If you need to block someone you’re following, you can block and unfollow them at the same time from your Following list. Click or tap the three dots at the top of the screen, and choose “Block.”

  3. From there, you can click the Unblock button next to any blocked user.

Alternatives to Blocking

If you don’t want to block specific users, but would like to have less visibility and engagement on your blogs, you may want to explore other Privacy Options.

Blocking on multiple blogs

Blocking is performed at the blog level (not account). You will need to block someone from each blog on your account. For example, if you have both a primary and secondary blog, you will need to block the user from both blogs separately.

Blocking from secondary blogs is not supported in the mobile app at the moment (you’ll need to use a web browser).

If I block someone, will they be able to find out?

We don’t tell people when you block them, but they might figure it out on their own if, for instance, they visit your blog, try to reblog one of your posts, and are prevented from doing so.

Blocking won’t remove your message history from the blocked users’ account.

Blocking from a group blog

If an admin of a Group Blog blocks someone using that account, the block will affect all of the members on that blog.

Blocking an anonymous ask

Blocking an anonymous ask will block the IP of the blog that sent it. That blog won’t be able to send you anonymous asks anymore, but they will still be able to interact with your account non-anonymously. You can also disable anonymous asks in your blog settings

Is it possible to circumvent a block?

Attempting to circumvent the block feature is a violation of our Community Guidelines and may result in action being taken against the blocked blog (and respective account).
