If you already own a domain name with another provider, you can use that domain with any of your Tumblr blogs. Follow the steps in this guide to keep your domain registered with your current provider and connect it to your Tumblr blog.
Connecting a domain to your Tumblr blog means:
- Your domain will show your Tumblr blog without the ‘Tumblr’ name in the address. Instead of a site address like yourgroovyblog.tumblr.com, visitors can reach your blog with an address like yourgroovyblog.com. The old .tumblr.com address will redirect to the new domain you add.
- You will continue to renew the domain name through the company you purchased it from (also known as your domain registrar).
Domain Connection Requirements
In order for your domain to work on Tumblr, it has to meet the following requirements:
- Your domain must be active. If your domain is expired or suspended at your domain registrar, the domain connection on Tumblr will not work.
- Your domain’s DNS A record must point to Tumblr’s IP address 66.6.44.4. If the A record for your domain is pointing elsewhere, the DNS server will not be able to find Tumblr.
- Cloudflare blocks Tumblr requests for validating the domain. To prevent connection disruption, it is recommended to have Cloudflare turned off for your domain.

Connect a Domain to your Blog
Once you have confirmed your domain meets the above requirements, proceed with the following steps to connect your domain to Tumblr.
- Go to tumblr.com/domains.
- Click on the “Connect to Tumblr” button.
- Enter the domain name you wish to connect and click on “Connect” to proceed to checkout.
- After completing checkout, you will be taken to the Domain Settings page for your newly purchased domain connection.
- Select the blog you want to connect the domain to.
That’s it, you are all set! Visitors should be able to get to your blog using the connected domain name.
Domain Disconnected
If your domain is disconnected unexpectedly, chances are something has changed in your domain settings which violated the domain connection requirements.
Tumblr will continue to monitor disconnected domains and attempt to reset the connections. Once your domain is back online, we will send you an email to let you know that things are back up and running.
