Appealing Content Removals and Account/Site Suspensions

Our Community Guidelines provide you with information about the types of content that are—and are not—permitted on Tumblr. Any content reported to us for violating our Community Guidelines or Terms of service will typically be reviewed by humans from our team of trained experts before taking action. An exception is sexually explicit content, and more information on how we handle such content is below. Violations of our Community Guidelines may result in the removal of your content or in your blog’s or account’s suspension.

If your content is removed or if your blog or account is terminated as the result of a Community Guidelines violation, you will receive a notification from us via email to the email address for your account (so make sure it is always up to date!). If you believe our decision was a mistake and your site, account, and content do not violate the Community Guidelines or Terms of Service you can appeal our decision here. Please do not reply to our original notification; replies sent directly in reply to content removal notifications will not reach us. Once we’ve received your appeal it will be reviewed (by humans!) without undue delay and you will be notified of our final decision. You can submit an appeal up to 6 months after our initial moderation decision.

Appealing Reports Decisions

If you reported content for violating our Community Guidelines, you will be notified of our moderation decision. If you disagree with the outcome, you’ll be able to appeal using this form (select “Appealing Reports Decisions” as the category) to provide us the reasons you think we made a mistake. Please only use this form if we have already responded to your report — we won’t be able to reply to new reports sent via this form. And please make sure you’re using the same address email that you used to report the content or we won’t be able to take it into account. Once we’ve received your appeal it will be reviewed by humans without undue delay and you will be notified of our final decision. You won’t be able to appeal again for the same content after this process.

Appealing Content Flagged as Explicit

Please refer to our Community Guidelines for what is considered sexually explicit on Tumblr. We use a mix of machine-learning classification and human moderation to classify posts that contain sexually explicit material.

We will always notify you if your content has been flagged as sexually explicit so that you have the opportunity to review it and take any additional action that may be needed.

You can review your flagged content at any time in the “Review flagged posts” section of your blog settings.

Finding the “Review flagged posts” page in the mobile app:

Reviewing and appealing

If you upload content that gets flagged as sexually explicit or has had a Community Label applied, you’ll receive a notification in two places:

Click or tap the “Appeal” button to submit an appeal. You will receive a verdict within 24 hours.

When reviewing your flagged content, you’ll see a few different buttons:

If you ask us to review your post for misclassification, we’ll send you an email once the appeal process has been completed. You may also prefer to simply remove the sexually explicit content from your post. If so, just use the pencil icon to edit your post to remove any violative content and then proceed to request a review. You can also use the trash can icon to delete the post entirely.

Note that only the original poster of content will be notified if it gets flagged as sexually explicit and given the ability to appeal. Reblogs of flagged content are not appealable, but they will show up in your flagged content list.

Also, if content has already been reviewed by one of our trained experts, then it cannot be appealed, and will say so in the banner on the post.

You can check the status of your appeal in the “Review flagged posts” section of your blog settings

If your appeal is denied, the post will remain hidden and the banner will change:

Out-of-court dispute resolution in the EU

If you’re located in the EU and weren’t able to resolve your appeal through Tumblr’s process, you may be able to bring your appeal to a certified out-of-court dispute settlement body. Tumblr can’t provide you with advice on this process, but we’ll engage with the out-of-court dispute settlement body as required.
