The
Adventure

Welcome to the Interstellar Lounge and Cafe!

More funky, or… …less funky.
Sit down, have a cup. While you're here something to muse on:

Think about what an awesome trip you're on,
How many millions of people benefit from Wikipedia every day,
How marvelous it is that people all over the world have collaborated to create this unique resource,
How important sharing knowledge is,
How people working together over time can do amazing things.

Hope that was an inspiring musing. 😄

Feedback on the game

Helpful feedback tips

Tell us what you liked about it, where we could improve, and what you learned

How you can help
  • Play the game all the way through. Do you get stuck anywhere? Is anything unclear?
  • Finish the game if you only played a few missions: Give some attention to missions 5-7 (which have been tested much less)
  • Start over fresh with a new account: Like User:OcaasiTWA17 (these are legitimate alternate testing accounts and are not considered sockpuppets)
  • Try a different browser: If you used Safari, try Firefox (or Chrome, Internet Explorer, Opera...)
  • Show the game to a friend or family member to see how they like it and if they get stuck anywhere
In your feedback, please include any of your thoughts on
  • text instructions within the game
  • graphic placement
  • bugs in the tour mechanics
  • your web browser
  • your screen resolution
  • which step of the tour you were on if something didn't work (see the step= in the url)
  • what you liked
  • what you didn't like
  • what you think would work better
  • your thoughts on the design: the theme, the guide, the characters, the colors, the images, the sounds
known bugs
Bug Stats
  • Fixed: 188!
  • Remaining: 3

Not fixable this version

  • Lingering Dialog Boxes: If you leave the tour without finishing, the guider dialog boxes will follow you until you [x] out of them (this is a Guided Tours issue generally and there's no easy fix) Example
  • Vector Only: If you're using monobook or modern etc., the layout won't work. Almost all new editors will be using Vector, so this is a known, acceptable trade-off
  • Old Internet Explorer: The game is not compatible with older versions of IE. IE8 doesn't work. Try IE9 or even better IE10.
  • Source Editor Only: The game doesn't work with Visual Editor. It could, but it won't be fixed until VE is stable and out of opt-in beta. Example
  • Mobile and Tablet Formatting Fails: While tested for most modern desktop and laptop browsers, the game is not configured to work properly on tablets and other smaller devices. It may, but we'd be getting lucky.
  • Doesn't scale to my preference of window size or scale symmetrically (ctrl 0/-/+). FF 25. (@start)

Fixable (working on these now)

mechanics

  • Reply using edit section links in some places rather than full page edit Example
  • There's no way to jump ahead if you are repeating steps or trying to get back to where you left off mid-mission.
  • If you [x] out of the tour, especially if so you can edit, then there's no way to get back to where you were (see example fix above for a 'skip' option) (should skips go per step, or per chunk?) Example
  • Galactic challenge box has only an [x] and a back button, is it clear you answer the question below? Example
Sorry to cut in, but I didn't realize that "Challenge yourself..." did anything beyond cheer-leading you to continue the game. Thanks for posting this. Wordreader (talk) 01:18, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

usability

  • warning, only click buttons that post message once?
  • a way to say 'yes, i've done this already, skip ahead?' (add skip forward button?) Example
  • Restart Repeats: If you replay, a mission, the messages will be resent to you (the tour doesn't 'know' if you've played before). To better retest the game, create a legitimate alternate testing account (e.g. OcaasiTWA17) which is not considered a sockpuppet at all.

content

  • TWA doesn't use/introduce cite templates
  • no mention of plagiarism and copy/paste problems
  • no mention of Show Preview
  • too many smileys?

What I liked

It is a very simple tutorial that allows to have a look at all the functions of Wikipedia. Feels like a game and makes it easy to learn.

What I didn't like

I didn't like the fact that sometimes they were some bugs. Sometimes it blocked and I had to edit and save several times in order to get to the next page.

What I wanted more of

It would be good to be able to go even more into details as an option.

What was unnecessary

Nothing, very good indeed.

Any other thoughts you want to share

No thanks

Feedback

What I liked

Everything shown was decent.

What I didn't like

Opened multiple browser windows (10 to be exact), the window that I wasn't allowed to close without starting over kept blocking the edit box and making it harder to complete tasks, didn't show me how to get rid of that annoying red box up top, some of the sections were too drawn out with multiple clicks.

What I liked

...Quick to provide information, not stuffed down your throat, engaging.

What I didn't like

...Missed out some core features, told you to copy and paste images etc from the box instead of finding them, and doesn't teach how to type the shortcuts. Didn't teach how to check new notifications etc.

What I wanted more of

...Basically, the above.

What was unnecessary

...None.

Any other thoughts you want to share

...This was great and informative, thanks! I've been editing anonymously for a while so I new most of this, but it was still helpful.

Possibly an added Note on embedded file formats v. uploaded image file formats...I think many Users will see a 'short' file format that might be confusing if the User isn't aware of the difference. This clarification might be helpful since both options are available.

What I liked

I really loved the adventure! I thought I cannot know more about Wikipedia, it just feels amazing to finally know how to use it perfectly, I only had one mistake, I can't actually believe it, it is better than any tutorials I have played on, considering the cool background for the game, and the live-chat tutorial! I had fun and I don't regret wasting these times I've had with it!

What I didn't like

Actually, the mistake I had traveled upon was one of the hardest questions, that is to choose between 3 categories, I think the game needs more of that AWESOME tips before they take the question.

What I wanted more of

Tips before questions.

What was unnecessary

Nothing is unnecessary! I feel pumped!

Any other thoughts you want to share

Nah, I personally said all that I wanted to share above.

feedback(i'm french-not new in editing wiki)

pony = wrong... not the ponyyy i want the flower :)

more seriously:

You say click on "edit" but: if i click on "edit" it is the visual editor and the game don't work.

You would say "click on "edit source".

I wonder why you don't do the game for visual editor, to modify article. There you choose the wikicode interface and never speak about the 2 interfaces(wikicode and visual editor).

Often, if i don't do what is said, like wikilink, and i click "save page". If i don't remember what was required to do, i am bloqued. It say to me "modify the comment of the edit then click to save" but i am blocked, In order to avance, i have to remember what the game wanted i do: make a wikilink on the word XX. If i remember, i can do, click on save, and advance (change page of the game). If i don't remember, i am blocked, and i have not succedded on find the request i had to do (not return when you click on "save").
Vatadoshufrench 10:43, 26 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think about a point that have not be mentionned in the "game": the sandbox. the sandbox is important for a "newbie" who want to write an article and you don't speak once about it.

Feedback on 'The Wikipedia Adventure'

What I liked

From a beginner's perspective, I think 'The Adventure' provides a fairly good introduction and walkthrough to Wikipedia. It was fine to have 'Earth' as the recurring article to work with and add to as the introduction progressed. I got a good 'feel' of the user interface and the way to do things. But that's only from a beginner's perspective. Experienced editors may have something they would like to add. Maybe I myself will change my mind about 'The Adventure' when I get more experience, it is difficult to say beforehand...

What I didn't like
  • I didn't like the toon character. The various drawings of the toon were poorly made. I think you should make up another toon from scratch. Have a graphical designer or a cartoonist look into it, please.
  • In Mission 4 on 'The Neutral Point of View', there was a particular message I didn't like. The message said: "The NPOV policy: Articles must not take sides, but should explain the sides, fairly and without bias. This applies both to what you say and how you say it. Give this a good, deep brain inhale. Let it soak into your cortexes. Think you got it?" I think the tone of this message is way out of place. It sounds impatient, unfriendly and aggressive. Maybe the administrative layers of Wikipedia are tired of explaining the same things over and over again to the newcomers - but hey, that tiredness is of no concern to the newcomers. Please, think this one over. Thx.
What I wanted more of

By the end of 'The Adventure', I would like a short list of the 'what is next', the more advanced editing techniques and issues. This list should contain a short description of these editing techniques and issues, and then some relevant links to further reading. Also, some sample articles displaying the 'what is hot and what is not' when editing Wikipedia would be useful.

What was unnecessary

Nothing unnecessary

Any other thoughts you want to share

No, not for the moment.

Feedback

Not exactly new to editing wikis but I still played through it, the badges looks pretty sweet.

I saw the thing about using section edits in the bugs section. I want to second that and add that the markup at the top of the page might be a bit confusing to new editors, if we used the section edit feature it would hide those text (at least in the parts before we add sections and where there is a level 1 heading in the earth article).

Another thing is that for the earth article you might want to point out that we don't usually use level 1 headings. and at some point that level 1 heading disappeared. I also suggest introducing templates somewhere in the tutorials because it might be one of the more confusing aspects of editing wiki pages especially if it is used in this tutorial.

The basic design, looks like it was illustrated by a super idealistic and smart child. =)

Sometimes I did a task but because I accidentally clicked back had to start over. But learned not to over time, no biggie.

What was unnecessary

The sound recordings, at least like this. Would be better to use that field more creatively, maybe an inspirational short pep talk?
