Revision as of 17:19, 23 November 2009

Valued pictures was a project to highlight images that add significant value to Wikipedia articles, either by illustrating article content particularly well, or by being a hard to obtain free use image of the content being illustrated. Per the consensus on Miscellany for Deletion, this project has been shut down.

This is not to be confused with Valued Images on Commons.

Current nominations

Dusky Leaf Monkey

Original - A young Dusky Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus obscurus) in Khao Sam Roi Yot national park in Southern Thailand
Reason
High EV, it makes the viewer want to know more. Good composition, background, colours, natural habitat. Missed FP by margin of 4:2. However there was agreement that it makes Wikipedia more attractive.

Reason
High EV in illustrating the Alpine Ibex in its natural habitat, good composition, good technicals. Missed FP by margin of 6 support :5 oppose for technicals.

Japanese Americans Pledging Allegiance to the American Flag

Original - First graders, some of Japanese ancestry pledging allegiance to the American flag in 1942.
Reason
Missed FP by a narrow margin (2 support + 4 weak support vs. 2 weak oppose). It was generally recognised to be of value.

I added myself as a co-nominator as I was the one who nominated this for FP status just over a week ago. If you mind, go ahead and remove this. Nezzadar [SPEAK] 17:48, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Don't mind at all. Just hope no coco-nominator will pop-up :). Elekhh (talk) 22:09, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'll be the cococo-nominator :-) ZooFari 04:03, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Promoted File:JapaneseAmericansChildrenPledgingAllegiance1942-2.jpg --Secret Saturdays (talk to me) 00:57, 10 December 2009 (UTC) As it has been up for quite some time now.[reply]

Early X-Ray

Original - Print of one of the first X-rays of Wilhelm Röntgen (1845-1923), the hand of his wife Anna taken in 1895
Reason
Very valuable image as it shows one of the first X-Rays ever taken. Value is increased by the fact that Anna is wearing her wedding ring, which shows the effects of X-Rays, along with her bones

Nominations older than 7 days - decision time!

Nominations in this category are older than seven days and are soon to be closed. Votes will still be accepted until closing of the nomination. Please close nominations from the bottom up.

Closing procedure

When NOT promoted, perform the following:

  1. Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:VPC/subpage:
    {{VPCresult|Not promoted| }} --~~~~ [[Category:Ended valued picture nominations]]
    • Do NOT put any other information inside the VPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
  2. Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply adding the line {{Wikipedia:Valued picture candidates/Image name}} from this page to the bottom of the archive.
  3. Remove the {{VPC}} talk page tag from the image and any other suggested versions. If any of those images were on Commons, be sure to tag the description pages with {{db-f2}}.
  4. Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for seven days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line {{Wikipedia:Valued picture candidates/Image name}} to the top of the section.
  5. If the nominator is new to VPC, consider placing {{subst:Wikipedia:NotpromotedVPC|Nomination/image name}} on their talk page. To avoid overuse, do not use the template when in doubt.
  6. If the nomination is listed at Template:VPC urgents, remove it.

When promoted, perform the following:

  1. Place the following text at the bottom of the WP:VPC/subpage:
    {{VPCresult|Promoted|File:FILENAME.JPG}} --~~~~ [[Category:Ended valued picture nominations]]
    • Replace FILENAME.JPG with the name of the file that was promoted. It should show up as:
    Promoted File:FILENAME.JPG
    • Do NOT put any other information inside the VPCresult template. It should be copied and pasted exactly.
  2. Add the nomination entry to the bottom of the July archive. This is done by simply adding the line {{Wikipedia:Valued picture candidates/Image name}} from this page to the bottom of the archive.
  3. Update the picture's talk page tag, replacing {{VPC}} with {{ValuedPicture|image_name}} (replace image_name with the nomination page name, i.e., the image name from Wikipedia:Valued_picture_candidates/image_name), and remove {{VPC}} from alternatives of the promoted image. If the alternatives were on Commons, be sure to tag the description page with {{db-f2}}.
  4. Add the image to Wikipedia:Valued pictures thumbs - newest on top. Include a link to its main article, and the creator if made by a Wikipedian. Follow examples of earlier promoted images.
  5. Add the recently promoted image to the gallery at Wikipedia:Valued pictures by adding it at the top of the list and deleting the bottom picture(s), keeping the number of images in the gallery at 16. Follow the same format as for Valued pictures thumbs. Don't forget to update the number of valued pictures - in the sentence "There are currently X valued pictures."
  6. Notify the nominator by placing {{subst:PromotedVPC|File:file_name.xxx}} on the nominator's talk page. For example: {{subst:PromotedVPC|File:Southern Right Whale.jpg}}.
  7. If the image was created by a Wikipedian, place {{subst:UploadedVP|File:file_name.xxx}} on the creator's talk page. For example: {{subst:UploadedVP|File:Southern Right Whale.jpg}}.
  8. Move the nomination entry to the top of the "Recently closed nominations" section. It will remain there for seven days after closing so others can review the nomination. This is done by simply moving the line {{Wikipedia:Valued picture candidates/Image name}} to the top of the section.
  9. If the nomination is listed at Template:VPC urgents, remove it.
