DYK for Dinanath Gopal Tendulkar

Merger proposal AJ John Memorial High School -> Kavilumpara

2010 is not over

Since 2010 is not over, plz do not put any data of 2010 on, because it is PROJECTED, it is not real. It is childish to make it LOOKS better.

It is YOU to change 2009 data back to 2010

You are the one who is making an unsourced data of 2010 I am the one who is changing the data back to 2009 watch carefully. So stop changing the data back to 2010, since there is no real 2010 data comes out, it is all PROJECTED.

correcting tamil spellings

hallo sodabottle, i appreciate you pointing out my mistakes correcting Tamil spellings here. thanks.

Erode

Can you please take a look at the Sinsen (talk · contribs) articles? I've had to block him again for repeatedly introducing factual errors. I just noticed that in July 2009 he changed Tirupur district to Erode district on Nagesh's article to say that Dharapuram is in Erode and so on. There's a lot of clean up required on this front. —SpacemanSpiff 07:42, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay. will go through them again. --Sodabottle (talk) 07:56, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I;ve reverted and blocked a few IP socks; you can find starting points in my revert history. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 11:36, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Erode Metropolitan Area will need to go to AfD, see the colorful history :) cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 11:46, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yikes. I have Afd'ed it. Will get to the others soon. Looks like lot of work for this weekend :-).--Sodabottle (talk) 12:24, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
A few socks in addition to the IPs. Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Sinsen. There's a lot of clean up required. —SpacemanSpiff 20:06, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to be mostly offline for a couple of days at least, I've asked User talk:Elockid to keep a watch on this, if there's something that needs attention like socks etc he can help out. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 05:13, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would you take a look at....

Joker (2011 film) is a recent article that began as a totaly unsourced stub, and it was not until it was sent to AFD that I even became aware of it. What I saw there was that the AFD template underscores a problem where a proffered Find sources proves to be absolutely useles,[1] contributing to a detrimental impression of unsourability. Not relying it it, I used a different set of search parameters and found that the topic has indeed been discussed in multiple reliable sources.[2] In using these, I began giving the article some attention... expanding the original unsourced stub and adding sources.[3] My question, as you are my guide in Indian Cinema, is this worthy of continued work? Or would Incubation be the better option? Thanks, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 22:34, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of silent films from South India

It seems this page contains details only about the silent Tamil films. So can we move this page to List of silent films from Tamil cinema or a similar specific title? -- Arfaz (talk) 11:50, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I thought about this when i created the article. Till 1932 the distinction between Tamil and telugu films was non existent. (probably because the Madras of that day had a large proportion of Telugu speakers). Even the first tamil talkie Kalidas (film) , called itself a "Tamil and Telugu" talkie. Theodore Baskaran (from whose book i have reproduced the list) calls them "south indian silent films" (Tamil: தென்னிந்தியாவில் தயாரிக்கப்பட்ட மெளனப்படங்கள்). And some of the films in this list have only english titles. While they were screened, theatres hired a local language speaker to give running commentary in that particular language to explain the story in the theatre!. I was stumped how to separate the films by language :-) and used a generic "south indian" title. I have no strong objection to moving the article to "List of silent Tamil films" but i am hesitant because we will be making a judgment which the source himself isn't making.--Sodabottle (talk) 12:23, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Then there are a few Malayalam and Kannada films that are to be added to this list. Better we can introduce a column to write the original language. In case of Kalidas (film) or any similar films, I think both the languages can be included. -- Arfaz (talk) 19:42, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In Malayalam, there are two silent films: Vigathakumaran (1928) and Marthanda Varma (1933). You can get more information from this list. About Kannada movies, most sources say the first Kannada film Sati Sulochana itself was a talkie. The same thing was listed in this wiki article also. -- Arfaz (talk) 20:12, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your opinion please

Hey Sodabottle. Could you weigh in here? I'd like to get some consensus before I do anything - Amog | Talkcontribs 06:00, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is this article notable enough to stay? Please have a look at it.Why so serious? Talk to me 04:43, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

yes. lots of blue links and most of the red links too easily pass our notability criteria.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:03, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. But I guess it still needs a lot of cleanup. Why so serious? Talk to me 10:36, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
One more. Please have a look at this article: Kamaraj Nagar, Vellore. Thanks, Why so serious? Talk to me 13:00, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Anna

hi sodabottle. Please be aware on being very particular from your side, if you go on argue thats India-today opinion, thats THE HINDU's opinion, plz then for what purpose they do the work. Why those works are created. There is no end for this. Be correct here. But the same even I can argue, thats TIME opinion, thats washington herald's opinion. Try to see whats the matter than the subject it comes from. Plz tell me then what will you ever accept, if at all I find it.

Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 06:56, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A fact has no sides, but a opinion certainly does. When you add a fact no one objects, when you call anna among top 100 indians, it is someone's opinion (in this case India today's). So you have to clearly state who is calling him that. Any subjective opinion has to be clarified as such. And to answer your question yes if it is a opinion of the hindu, or time or washington herald, it has to be mentioned as "the hindu calls Y as _____". The issue is not "what i accept", it is that you still don't get what to add in wikipedia (or you are deliberately ignoring it). Why else do you think everyone who deals with you keep reverting your contributions. The problem is in on your side, not with the "rest of wikipedia". Keep this up and you will one day end up at ANI and an indef block.-Sodabottle (talk) 07:05, 4 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possible non notable articles

Hi. Please have a look at these articles:

Thanks, Abhishek Talk to me 18:11, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't take a look at these (will do it tomorrow. sunday midnight here :-)). But as a general rule, i have seen a lot of previous AfDs of named trains always being closed as keep. The argument went like, if it is something more than a train time table slot (i.e has a name etc) it is notable.--Sodabottle (talk) 18:32, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. But the Bhopal Jan Shatabdi article was similar to the Indore – Ajmer Express article, but it was proded and deleted. I can't understand why AfD's on named trains are closed as keep, when they seen quite non notable. As such apart from what is present in the above article, I do not think that they can be expanded further. Abhishek Talk to me 01:13, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If there is no GNG like demand for the train, any accidents the train was in etc, take it to AfD. Consensus can always change there.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:12, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Big numbers

Somehow this set of edits reminds me of this person. Am I just imagining things? -- Hoary (talk) 13:49, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure. Anwar/Shinas usually leaves edit summaries, fills up his user page to make it a blue link within the first ten or so edits, gets autoconfirmed by making minor edits to random pages and also uses the talk page once reverted. Since this account was created well before his block in December and the user page is a redlink, i dont think this is Anwar/Shinas. I will keep an eye on the contributions to see if any familiar patterns popup.--Sodabottle (talk) 14:07, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You make a number of good points there. Thank you. -- Hoary (talk) 14:09, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Editing in an unfair manner to the topic thereby absolutely losing the meaning

Why you are so scared to put the truth? Please don`t vandalize under some pretext or other, okay! You can see yourself various headings of other faiths, particularly the majority faith headings, and judge yourself how neutrality and neutral interest is followed there, including your own favourite topic `Irreligion in India`! Wikipedians are not wicked people, understand this basic principle. Please refrain from unwanted vandalism. Give respect for genuine feelings/opinions of others. --59.177.197.204 (talk) 01:24, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If you are talking about my edits in Christianity in Tamil Nadu, i have given you enough explanation, how wikipedia works and what are the rules here. What i am doing is not vandalism, just read WP:NPOV. You can't call people "infidels" here. (you call people "infidels" and then talk about showing respect for geninue feelings/opinions of others?). And to term my edits as "vandalism" is certainly an insult. The fact that you still dont get what you are doing wrong and me being an atheist has nothing to do with it, indicates you will never be able to edit neutrally here. Go find a different outlet which conforms to your world view of "infidels and martyrs" and leave wikipedia alone.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:51, 11 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

India

You have removed my addition of a sentence from this page. I have added "Between 1540-56, the Afghan king Sher Shah Suri and Hindu king 'Hem Chandra Vikramaditya', popularly called Hemu, ruled North India". The sentence is reverted saying that this information is un-necessary. This surprises me, because impression is that after 1192, when Prithvi Raj Chauhan was defeated up to 1857 Foreign invaders ruled India. This is not true as my sentence shows that natives had their stints also. so please consider this point judiciously and put this one sentence on the page.

Sudhirkbhargava (talk) 16:18, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no position on this issue. but your first addition was reverted by user chipmunkdavis and you readded it without a discussion in the article talk page. per our WP:BRD policy, we dont add back once a content is contested. please put this note up in the india talk page with your rationale for addition and try to gain consensus there.--Sodabottle (talk) 16:29, 12 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Erode again

Can you take a look once more? He had an unblock request declined and got back to his old ways IP hopping -- used a reference for traffic congestion in Panneer Selvam Park when the article says no such thing and so on. There are at least two ranges he operates on, and I'll have to check on collateral damage before we can do anything on that. I've semi'd the main pages for now, but he has a wide range of targets, I just had to remove towns in Namakkal district from Neighbourhoods of Erode category and so on. Also, there are some dubious edits of "Third grade municipality" across many small town/village articles that you should check. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 19:59, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also check Erode Electric Locomotive Works and the related Diesel page, looks like him. —SpacemanSpiff 20:05, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh my there is a large sockfarm that has sprung up. I have identified these:
  • Ecodynamic
  • Chromeson
  • Colorfulclothes
  • Powerofthoughts
  • Winnerstage
  • Chittorean
  • Southernrail

and IP ranges 117.193.160.0/20 and 117.206.96.0/20 as him. I will open an SPI and once the socks are bagged, tagged and range blocked. I will set to the cleaning work. He is learning for his past mistakes, his new articles are not outright spam.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:33, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the SPI - Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Sinsen. Once the range is blocked i will set to speedying/prodding/cleaning his latest creations. (I am creating a list of them to get at, but with his IP still free to remove prod and speedy tagging, i will wait till the range gets blocked)--Sodabottle (talk) 05:25, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I hadn't noticed the no of socks! One thing that needs checking is all these Tiruppur/Namakkal/Karur towns and villages to see if they have been included in Erode metro, basically he's covered those three districts in his metro. Also, reg the Erode municipal corp, all the info he's added everywhere contradicts their website. —SpacemanSpiff 07:06, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
have started on that. I am basically verifying a)if the third grade municipalities are indeed third grade municipalities (so far no hoaxes there) b) and the towns/railwaystations/articles he has added the "erode" tag to are really related to erode (some are and most aren't). I am marking them offline for now. will make the corrections in bulk.--Sodabottle (talk) 07:27, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up

Only you turned up at J&K map [4] irregularity, others who have india in their watchlist turned a blind eye due to political reasons. I just want to be objective here than being blindly patriotic. Your suggestion of changing color of Himachal pradesh is not accepted as 4 colours are voted against in all locator maps uniformly. If you revert that image file once we can stop that lone opposing editor using wp:3r, he is author of that image but i regret his decision not to budge to reality. Avoided blue (talk) 04:57, 20 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This one was deleted last November[5] as principle filming had not been confirmed, and it was pretty much too soon for a shelved film. When the article was recreated and sent to AFD,[6] I was able to source that it had indeed come off the shelf and that filming had begun August 2010... and as of last January it had completed its New York shots. Happily, the nominator withdrew. Could you look in and see what you might be able to do to further improve and source the article? Thanks much, Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 01:36, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification on Image usage

Hi Sodabottle. I just want to clarify that can we use images available in tamil wiki articles or other languages wiki articles "Images" used on English wiki articles. Example: Vijay(actor) in tamil wiki to English. Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 08:52, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Images can't be used across wikis, unless they are in Commons. If they are properly licensed move them to commons. For example, the vijay photo seems to have a valid license proven by a OTRS ticket. For such images upload the picture commons with the same description and with the same licensing info adn the name of the original uploader. --Sodabottle (talk) 08:58, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mentoring students: be sure to check in on them

This message is going out to all of the Online Ambassadors who are, or will be, serving as mentors this term.

Hi there! This is just a friendly reminder to check in on what your mentees are doing. If they've started making edits, take a look and help them out or do some example fixes for them, if they need it. And if they are doing good, let them know it!

If you aren't mentoring anyone yet, it looks like you will be soon; at least one large class is asking us to assign mentors for them, and students in a number of others haven't yet gotten to asking ambassadors to be their mentors, but may soon. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 20:08, 21 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

groups of students in need of mentors

Hey Sodabottle. One of the classes working with the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, Jonathan Obar's Media and Telecommunication Policy, is working in small groups and would like us to assign a mentor to each group (rather than having students request the mentors they'd like, as other classes are doing).

I invite you to sign on as the mentor for one or more groups, especially if any of the topics catch your interest. To sign up, go to the course page and add yourself as "Mentor: you" in the section for that group. They students and/or professor or campus ambassadors should be cleaning things up soon to list all the usernames for each group and add a few more groups. Once you know who the students are in the group, you can leave them each a quick introduction to let them know you'll be mentoring their group.

Thanks!--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 19:08, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox clarification on leaders of politics.

Hi Sodabottle. Just want to know can we construct infobox update in MGR, Karunanidhi articles to include their political office details as Chief Minister and other various position they held in the political arena. See for Ex: Anna, Rajaji etc., Also can we do this on ALL related other articles of leaders of Tamil Nadu. ---- Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 08:24, 23 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, none of them are department events, but, events like Techniche and Cognizance (IIT Roorkee) clearly make no assertions to notability. I can't seem to find coverage on Google News either - Amog | Talkcontribs 07:28, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

For making 10 wiki celebrations and Wikipedia stall at Pragyan, a great success, sparing sometime for outreach amidst busy edit schedule.I learnt a few things about outreach from you. Thanks:) Srikanth (Logic) 03:31, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

help

I removed a large body of incoherent text from Kongu Vellalar article, some of which i believe could be legitimate content. I am trying to sort through the mess and decide what can go back into the article and realize i really dont know much about the subject. any help will be appreciated. --CarTick (talk) 18:11, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

sorry. I have to pass on this. I have strong POV about the subject (basically any caste) and find it hard to maintain objectivity. Will probably make matters worse if i wade in (I have a thin skin - if i get one tenth of the abuse you endure in Nadar/Nair articles, i am afraid i would do something stupid and get indef blocked :-))--Sodabottle (talk) 19:17, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
fair enough. thin skinned isnt helpful. just kidding. :) may be just this benign question. The Gounders as we know it in movies (e.g. Chinna Gounder), are they all just Kongu Vellalars? --CarTick (talk) 19:26, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and specifically those in the western districts (cbe, tirupur, salem, namakkal, erode). This is where they are numerically and socially dominant. There are a fair number of kongu vellalars in some southern districts, but they are a minority and you won't find chinna gounders there :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 19:31, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
that settles my doubt. thanks. --CarTick (talk) 19:40, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

About Vijayanagar rule in Tamil Nadu

Hi! How are you? :) I feel that there is very little coverage of the two centuries between the demise of the Madurai Sultanate upto the rise of the Madurai Nayaks and Thanjavur Nayaks. How abt a separate article on the rule of the Vijayanagar Empire in Tamil Nadu??? I would very much like to discuss with you abt its feasibility. If you don't mind, can u send me ur mobile no through Wiki mail-The EnforcerOffice of the secret service 13:20, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
