==Reorganization==

In the summer of 2013, Advance Publications merged Sun Newspapers with Cleveland.com to form a new company - the Northeast Ohio Media Group (NEOMG). In the process, Advance laid off the majority of the journalists that staffed Sun News. Many had worked there for decades. A small group of reporters were offered full-time positions with NEOMG. Others were offered temporary positions with the new company, covering community beats until permanent replacements were hired.

Today, all of the local content printed under the Sun News brand is produced by freelancers, many of whom previously worked as full-time reporters for Sun Newspapers. Many of those same reporters have earned awards from the Press Club of Cleveland, the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists and the Suburban Newspapers of America for their coverage of local news.

Advance Publications reorganized the newsroom again in January 2016 to form Advance Ohio as a holding company for its non-union editorial staff and its multimedia ad sales staff for all of its Cleveland-based news brands.

==Union vs. Non-union==

A distinguishing trait between the staffs at Sun Newspapers/Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer (also owned by Advance Publications) is that The Plain Dealer's editorial staff belonged to a union - The Plain Dealer News Guild - whereas journalists working for Sun Newspapers/Cleveland.com did not. This difference was a source of friction between the staffs from the time Advance Publications bought all three entities in 1998. Despite that fact, all three entities published content on the Cleveland.com website following the purchase and the union and non-union newsrooms continue to do so today.

Many observers in local media and beyond viewed the formation of NEOMG, and subsequently Advance Ohio, as a union-busting effort. Advance Ohio President Chris Quinn, a employee of The Plain Dealer, has attributed persistent financial struggles and periodic layoffs at both Advance properties to the precipitous decline in print revenue from The Plain Dealer as its circulation numbers have continued to dwindle. Plain Dealer President and Editor George Rodrigue has taken exception to Quinn's public jabs at the paper and its reporters. Much of the bickering has played out in the local alternative newspaper Cleveland Scene Magazine.

Sun Newspapers was formed as a chain of weekly newspapers serving Northeast Ohio. Prior to a major reorganization in 2013, the chain consisted of 11 weekly newspapers serving 49 different communities in Greater Cleveland.[1] The papers are focused on suburbs and exurbs in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lorain and Medina counties. Its offices are in Valley View.

Some of the papers in the chain date back, under previous ownership, to the early 20th century, the company was founded as part of SunMedia in 1969. In 1998 it was sold to Advance Publications, part of the S.I. Newhouse media empire, which also publishes The Plain Dealer, the region's major daily.

Newspapers[edit]

The 11 papers are divided into four groups. Each group is responsible for two to three different papers, all of which have defined coverage areas.
