Castbox is a podcast company and app.

Founding

Castbox was founded in 2016 by company CEO[1] Renee Wang[2] in Beijing, China. It also has offices in San Francisco and Hong Kong.[3]

App

Castbox is an app that distributes free podcasts. As of 2019, it has about one million podcasts available through it, [4] including about fifty million podcast episodes.[1] It also has a premium platform.[5] Castbox creates transcripts of all podcasts on the app, so that users can search for specific phrases or topics within the audio when deciding what to download.[6] In June 2019, Castbox integrated with Waze, allowing playback controls to pause, skip, or restart episodes.[7]

Podcasts

In addition to its library of podcasts from other distributors, Castbox also produces its own podcasts. For example, in 2018 Castbox partnered with Heard Well on the podcast series Heard Well Now, which highlights early career musical artists. [8] As of 2018 Castbox produced 25 different original podcasts,[9][10] with This Sounds Serious being released in 2019. [11]

Funding

In 2017 the company raised $16 million,[6] and an additional $13.5 million in 2018.[5]
