Plot
Major Vijay Kumar, an army commando working in the 51 Special Action Group of National Security Guard (NSG) does a anti-terrorist operation in Kashmir. He later learns that his girlfriend Tejaswini "Teju", a news presenter, is pregnant. He later agrees to marry her. Vijay's twin brother Abhay Kumar is a chronic schizophrenic psychopath, traumatic about his past. Since childhood Abhay spent most of his life in a mental asylum for killing his stepmother Jayanti. Vijay cares about Abhay and looks forward to his release, but Abhay’s psychiatrist Srinivasa states that he is a danger to society and should not be released.

Vijay and Teju visit the asylum where Abhay lives to share the news about their upcoming marriage. Seeing Teju, Abhay becomes angry as he thinks she is a witch, spirit of Jayanti, whom he hates for spoiling his life. Seeking to save Vijay from Teju, who he sees as the "witch", Abhay later manages to escape custody after killing two other inmates there. Abhay later meets his maternal uncle Ranganath—the person who admitted him in the asylum—who dies of a cardiac arrest upon seeing him. After the completion of wedding, Vijay and Teju are shocked to learn of Abhay’s escape. The doctor thinks that it was another patient named Sultan who escaped killing Abhay, but Vijay becomes sure that it was Abhay.

Abhay leaves a message to Vijay's house from a public phone booth that he will kill Teju, they were sleeping at that time but Vijay wakes and listens the message. Once Abhay sees a bill-board of film-actress Sharmilee and he dances with her in rain in his imagination and Abhay gets attracted to her. Following Teju Abhay comes to a hotel and in that hotel he enters a room with Sharmilee, they take drugs, Abhay gets hallucinations after taking those things and sees Sharmilee as his stepmother and for this reason a fight occurs between them. Abhay fiercely murders her and later regrets and talks in imagination with his real mother Priya. Police visit there and thinks the killer is Sultan but Vijay confirms about the killer is his own brother.

Vijay and Teju leave for Ooty where Vijay and Abhay passed their childhood to stay safe from Abhay, but Abhay secretly follows them. Vijay and Teju find Abhay’s old diary in the house through which they read his past and Vijay imagines: Vijay and Abhay’s mother committed suicide due to their father Colonel Santosh's affair with Jayanti, who later became their stepmother. Both brothers hate her, though Vijay’s hatred was not severe, on the other hand Abhay does miscreancy in school. A teacher complains about it to Santosh and Abhay justifies that he is only reflecting the home environment. An enraged Santosh beats both his sons for vocally abusing his wife. One day, the brothers see Jayanti having an affair with another person and Abhay tries telling this to his father who pays no heed, and instead beats him. Abhay pleads to his maternal uncle (retired colonel) to take him along with him. But as he is suffering from throat cancer, he refuses and suggests a boarding school. Eventually, Vijay leaves with his uncle to a boarding school while Abhay remains home.

The situation gets worse at home with Abhay and Jayanti both hating each other and Santosh gets a heart attack. Abhay overhears a conversation between his stepmother and a lawyer, and realises that she is after his father's wealth. Seeing this, Santosh dies due to another heart attack. Abhay is now shocked to see both his deceased parents in his hallucination. His mother gives him the mission of killing Jayanti, which Abhay does. Abhay stays with the corpses in the house before being incarcerated at the asylum.

In the present, Vijay learns from his old friend Danushkut that Abhay has reached Ooty. Vijay reaches on time to save Teju from Abhay, who entered their hotel room and leaves with her. Abhay chases the car in which they escape. After a long chase, Vijay manages to push Abhay’s car into an abyss and assumes he is dead. However, Abhay escapes and continues his trail. Vijay plans to leave the city and notices Abhay coming to the hotel secretly where Vijay and Teju are staying.

Vijay and other NSG members try to nab Abhay but he takes on everyone. He even successfully enters Teju's room, and Teju starts whacking him with belt in fear and anger, Abhay then imagines his past that Jayanti is beating him. Vijay reaches by then and sends Teju in safe room, later in outside there is a fight between Abhay and Vijay, in which the much stronger Abhay overpowers Vijay. Suddenly, Abhay sees in imagination that his mother Priya asking him to join her as Jayanti is torturing her up there. He realises his mistake and apologises to Vijay for chasing Teju. To kill his stepmother, he lights up some cylinders despite Vijay's request not to do so and to return. The cylinders explode and kill Abhay. Teju is later revealed to be pregnant with twins and fears that if their child becomes like Abhay, listening this Vijay ensures her that they will give good services to their children and also tells her not to be nervous.

Actor Kamal Haasan wrote a story about a psychopath which was titled Dhayam in the year of 1984 in the Tamil journal, Idhayam Pesugiradhu. He had discussed to turn the story into a film with South India's famous film director of that time K. Balachander, who was Kamal's mentor during the period, but he felt that the story was unsuitable of its time. In 2000, he picked up the story again and agreed to make it a film with director Suresh Krissna, a former assistant of Balachander, and producer S. Thanu. When Thanu had agreed to produce a film for Haasan, he had initially rejected the storylines of the Tamil films [[Pammal K. == Release and reception ==
Abhay was released on 16 November 2001. Film critic of IndiaFM (later known as Bollywood Hungama) Taran Adarsh said, "On the whole, Abhay has nothing to offer to the masses or the classes. Poor". Rediff author R. Swaminathan said, "What happens when an exceptionally talented actor develops an inexplicable urge to delve into the dark side of the human psyche, and worse, decides to paint the town red about it? Well, for one, you get a film called Abhay".  Vijay Ramanan of Planet Bollywood rated the film 5.5 out of 10, saying, "The film falls flat on its face because of its failure in the two most important departments of filmmaking – scriptwriting, and direction [...] It almost seems as if Kamal Haasan and Suresh Krishna were high on drugs while making this film. Smriti Kashyap of fullhyd.com said "The movie is a huge letdown. It lacks the pop, snap and crackle to fill you with enough guts to potter down to the theater and watch it.
