A few people asked me what I am actually doing at Philipps & Byrne and why I decided to work as a consultant. So let me recap the last 10 months: Transitioning from a senior manager role in tech to a consultant has been quite a journey. In that new role, I do the same things from a quite different angle and with much more impact. Besides our core focus on Tech Due Diligence and internal Health Checks, I also act as a sparring partner for CTOs and CPOs on their strategic initiatives. My work involves supporting management teams in building scalable product engineering organizations and operating models, creating and implementing post-merger integration plans, enhancing architecture, and improving engineering and product practices. The diversity of companies I can engage with is truly inspiring - and something that is definitely the biggest difference from my former job as an Engineering Director. From med tech and climate tech to a prominent German travel company, a leading UK hospital software provider, a cloud governance venture on its way to unicorn status, and one of Europe’s largest SaaS conglomerates, the variety gives me a lot of energy. Despite the economic challenges, the feedback we receive after each project makes it all worthwhile. Clients appreciate our human-centered and solution-oriented approach, which genuinely makes a difference and sets organizations on the path to success. Those who have worked with me know my passion lies in bringing people together (like in my "little" side project Mentoring Club), fostering growth, and eliminating toxic culture and leadership. At Philipps & Byrne, we primarily work with people and teams; technology is second - and in most cases, technology choices and the quality of software architecture is a direct reflection of how well a team is organized and if all team members understand the purpose and strategy of the organization. Together with the startups we work with, we aim to find the most pragmatic solutions, avoiding process-heavy, bureaucratic approaches. We strive to make teams work together seamlessly and enjoyably, all while applying empathy and fostering a sense of togetherness. This is the impact we strive to achieve in every project, making a tangible difference in the organizations we work with. If you have questions about our services and projects, send me a direct message. I'll be happy to meet and chat. We love the alphalist podcast. It's an outstanding channel with remarkable technology leaders from some of Europe's most aspiring tech companies.
100 episodes! We couldn't let this milestone pass us by without thanking all the people who made the past 100 episodes (and all the future ones 🙂) possible. Thank you to our guests. You don't know what an impact your words and ideas have had on CTOs and the tech world. Just the other day a #CTO told us just some of the many practices he does that were inspired by the podcast. And he is not the only one. 🥳 We can’t say that these times are boring. Meta just shared updates on their Llama 3 70B #LLM with promising results while also teasing interesting checkpoint results for a humongous 400B model which is still in the oven and is probably going to get much better towards finalisation. 🧁 This same same week, Microsoft shares another side to this with #SLM (small language model) Phi-3: a series of tiny 3.8B language models. 📊 Make-shiftily and sloppily juxtaposing the numbers into a single view and color-coding some of the records (red=lame, yellow=mwah, green=dope, blue=similar), showcases how: 1. the 400B behemoth from Meta dominates the open-weights model space in terms of performance, 2. tiny models hold their own in reasoning tasks (sometimes beating slightly bigger models, see PIQA, Social IQA, WinoGrande), but kinda suck at remembering stuff like the material needed to pass the medical board exam (see MedQA) or win trivia night (see TriviaQA) 🎈 which makes sense considering that there is more compression happening in crafting tiny models 3. larger context windows aren’t always better (see Phi-3-Mini-4K-In vs Phi-3-Mini-128K-In where 128K has a considerably larger context window but kinda sucks sometimes) ⭐ My take: Tiny models, trained and tuned smarter are making waves. Big models still dominate with regards to model performance but it’s going to be a nice balancing act of picking the right model for the task at hand in order to obtain the right kind of experience (balancing performance vs resource use vs latency) for whatever it is that you’re building. Probably time to drop the fixation on L in LLM and focus on doing dope stuff with right-sized LMs for the job at hand. 🤨 What opportunities and potentials builds are you seeing for tiny pocket-sized LMs? And are you using LM Studio yet? ⚽️ Johannes Schmidt and Chris Philipps 🏳️🌈 kept persistently kicking my butt for a blurb on this topic. Let me know which other tech topics, you'd like such posts about. 🥱 TL;DR: The teeny models generally suck at recalling facts (see TriviaQA) and passing medical board exams (see MedQA) which kind of makes sense considering how much compression they have to do but otherwise the tiny models hold their own in comparison to some considerably bigger models in terms of their reasoning ability (see ARC Challenge, CommonsenseQA) and math (see GSM8K CoT). Don’t ask them to write code. The trade-off however is “something that can run offline and in your pocket” without your device breaking too much of a sweat.

Check out this article by Hagen Hübel from our Expert community on “Enhancing Performance in PostgreSql: The Journey to Optimized Cosine Distance Searches”.👨💻 Not overengineering their tech stack is a constant challenge for #CTOs and #Engineers. After all, the fewer the components, the lesser the chances of failure. In his article, Hagen looks into a database solution using #PostgreSQL and the pgvector extension. CTOs and Engineers: Take notes. 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈🦄#UITHACK24 was a blast! 🦄 🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈 It was truly a pleasure to be involved in this year's Unicorns In Tech Hackathon by UHLALA Group, in which Chris Philipps 🏳️🌈 joined the jury panel alongside Valeria Barsukov, Ghonche Tavoosi, Alexandru-Daniel Țanțu,Melinda Jacobs, and Michelle Torres 🏳️🌈. The focus for this year's challenge was on the important issue of mental health within the LGBTIQ+ community. Ten teams pitched their ideas, and they all came up with great ideas to tackle different problems around LGBTIQ+ mental health. This once again shows how solutions by the community for the community can make a real impact and that LGBTIQ+ talents and aspiring entrepreuneurs need to be empowered - not just by the community but also by investors. 🏳️⚧️🧑💻🏳️🌈 A big salute to all the teams who invested their efforts in this challenge and thanks to Pau Picó, Bertrand Duteil, and everyone at UHLALA Group for making this event happen 🌈🦄🌈🦄 Chris Philipps 🏳️🌈 Johannes Schmidt David Asabina Simon Brendel Bastian Buch Philipp Clauss Katja Karpač Ihtisham Ahmad Taimur Ibrahim Na'aman Hirschfeld #LGBTIQ+ #MentalHealth #startup #tech
