February 13-23, 2025. One of the world's largest public film festivals & a crucial film industry forum.

Info

The Berlinale is a unique place of artistic exploration and entertainment. It is one of the largest public film festivals in the world, attracting tens of thousands of visitors from around the globe each year. For the film industry and the media, the eleven days in February are also one of the most important events in the annual calendar and an indispensable trading forum. The Berlin International Film Festival enjoys an eventful history. The festival was created for the Berlin public in 1951, at the beginning of the Cold War, as a “showcase of the free world”. Shaped by the turbulent post-war period and the unique situation of a divided city, the Berlinale has developed into a place of intercultural exchange and a platform for the critical cinematic exploration of social issues. To this day it is considered the most political of all the major film festivals. The Berlinale brings the big stars of international cinema to Berlin and discovers new talents. It accompanies filmmakers of all disciplines on their paths into the spotlight and supports careers, projects, dreams, and visions. Thanks to its numerous industry initiatives, the Berlinale is a significant driver of innovation and an important economic factor internationally as well as for companies in Germany and Berlin. • The Berlinale is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Michael Verhoeven, who passed away at the age of 85. Michael Verhoeven was a long-time companion of the Berlinale. He made festival history with “o.k.”. The film caused such a strong reaction in 1970 that the festival had to be prematurely ended and was given a new face the following year with the integration of the Forum. His films were screened in Competition in 1990 and 1996, and in 1990 he was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Director for “Das schreckliche Mädchen”. In 1992, the director was a member of the International Jury. Verhoeven and his wife, Senta Berger, were always more than welcome guests at the Berlinale; their cinema, Toni & Tonino, in Berlin-Weißensee was the venue for Berlinale Goes Kiez for many years. The cinema has lost its “most gentle rebel”, as Georg Seeßlen writes today in the German newspaper Die Zeit, and the Berlinale has lost one of its most loyal friends. Rest in peace, dear Michael.

  • Today, on April 9, 2024, the former director and president of the EFM (European Film Market), Beki Probst, was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (Verdienstkreuz am Bande der Bundesrepublik Deutschland). Beki Probst is considered the grande dame of the film world. Under her direction, the European Film Market has developed into one of the largest and most important trade fairs for cinema on the international scene. In 2018 on occasion of the Berlinale Camera Award, Dieter Kosslick congratulated his long-time colleague and friend on 30 years of successful work: “Without Beki Probst and her contacts worldwide, her charm and cosmopolitan gift for combining business and culture, the EFM would never have become such a successful platform and the strong backbone of the festival.” Beki Probst was born in Istanbul, where she first worked as a journalist after completing her studies in law and journalism. In 1960, Probst moved to Switzerland, where she became the general manager of the Probst-Kinobetriebe, known today as Quinnie Cinemas. From 1981 to 1988, Beki Probst served as the Berlin International Film Festival's official delegate for Turkey and Greece. Up until 1995 she also served as a member of the selection committee for Locarno International Film Festival. From 1988 to 2014, Beki Probst was the director of the Berlinale’s European Film Market – Probst rebranded the former “film fair” as the European Film Market and subsequently transformed the event into one of the most significant industry meet-ups for the international film business. In addition, from 1988 to 1996 Beki Probst was artistic director of the Geneva-based festival “Stars de Démain”. She has served as a jury member on multiple occasions at international film festivals, including appearances in Toronto, Jerusalem and San Sebastián. In 1992 Beki Probst was decorated as “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” by the French Ministry of Culture, was honoured with the Berlinale Camera in 2018 and in 2019 with the Honorary Award of the Swiss Film Award. Our warmest congratulations! 🎬🏅 #Berlinale #EFM #EuropeanFilmMarket European Film Market
