Costume Name: Sally, from The Nightmare Before Christmas (Recreation)
Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Liz Gotauco
Costume Description: I built the wig and dress from scratch, using second-hand materials to contribute to Sally’s “Ragdoll” persona. I used scraps from tablecloths, pajamas and clothes, upholstery samples, and even the yarn was sourced second hand. I dyed some scraps to achieve the right colors, aiming for the palette used in the movie rather than the merchandising. I used puffy paint to create the spiral pattern of the bodice. I hand-stitched the black yarn details. I purchased two pairs of tights but modified one to wear as a top. I did my own makeup using a mix of theater makeup and fashion makeup.
Bio: I’m a librarian, singer, and cosplayer from Rhode Island. I work with teens in a lovely public library where we get to host comics and fandom events. I sing in cover bands and local cabarets, currently fronting a pop/dance band. And I’ve enjoyed cons such as RI Comic Con, Leaky Con Boston, and NYCC. During RI’s shelter-in-place, I made unconventional Disney cosplays using only the supplies I had in my apartment. You can see those and more of my work on Instagram and Facebook.
My cat’s name is Louis.
Outdoor photos are by Jade Gotauco, 2018. All other photos and videos are by me, 2020. Music is “Circus of Fear” by Open Wave (courtesy of the PowerDirector app).
Quarantine Day XXX at the New York Sanctum, an entry for the #ComicConatHome and #ComicConAtHomeMasquerade

Costume Name: Dr. Stephen Strange and Clea (Strange)
Costume description: Dr. Strange’s costume is a recreation of the first movie costume. Clea’s costume is very loosely based on her comic book costume, as she has not made the jump from paper into the MCU.
Bio: A couple of archaeologists who like to make costumes and dress up.

An Original Design crafted by Sarah Kruger (@queenofthefrostborn) “The Frostborn are a people, beings made of that frost, that fog, that cold and mystery. Their queen is strong as ice, and just as beautiful. Astra. As her story came to me, playing out in my head, I knew that I had to make her real.”
An Original Design by Mandy Pursey, with Ryan Pursey (@bethesparkcosplay) “Growing up as an arm amputee, I dreamed of the day when fairy tales would include characters who looked like me too! I came up with the idea of Cinderella trading out her glass slippers for a glass arm, and set to work making this story come to life.”
Made by Frank P. (@franklybuilt) “My late father took me to see the first Iron man in 2008 when I was about 16 years old and ever since then I’ve been hooked on the MCU and specifically Iron Man. I always dreamed of having my own armor. I mean what kid wouldn’t? But it was always this impractical goal and I had no idea how to use EVA foam or Papercraft. Years went by and eventually, I felt it was time to try my hand at a Cosplay after watching Avengers Endgame and being blown away with the MK85 Armor! It was time to make my first Cosplay. Enter 3D Printing.”
Designed and made by Breanne Cremean (@thegeekstresscos) “Ack! is a part of an amnesia Dungeons and Dragons campaign and has no memory of her past. She chose her name because it’s the first sound she can remember anyone making in reference to her.”
Made by Birdy Cosplay (@birdy-cosplay) “Costume is made by me, the only purchased parts are the yellow wing parts (I ordered them already in this shape) and the wig (I styled it myself, but bought the base from Arda Wigs). It was my biggest project so far and it took around 9 months with some short breaks to complete it.”
Crafted by Daniella Lo Presti (@ksfabricartist) “I created this costume in order to bring to life this character in a realistic way. To replicate the skirt embroidery I deconstructed and pieced back together with different types of lace and I used several layers of cloth so that, when twirling, the gown would open up like a flower. Indeed, in Fate Zero, Arturia is described as being the flower of the battlefields.”
Consisting of assorted recreations, from Noe Ernesto Cruz Vargas (@lobisonx9) “In this video, I show most of the cosplay that I have done for several years, in the pure gamer style. It has been a lot of creative work, use of many materials and hours and hours of work. We have an altruistic group in Mexico, we visit children’s hospitals, orphanages, children with cancer, etc.”
Crafted by Liz Gatouco (@cosbrarian) “I built the wig and dress from scratch, using second-hand materials to contribute to Sally’s “Ragdoll” persona. I used scraps from tablecloths, pajamas and clothes, upholstery samples, and even the yarn was sourced second hand.”
Adrienne C. (@waxsealedcostumes) 1740’s Elizabeth Swan, from Pirates of the Caribbean “My 1740s Elizabeth Swann is almost entirely hand sewn with historical materials and historical construction methods from the outside in, starting from the shift, stays, panniers, under petticoat, matelassé outer petticoat, to the silk pleated-back English gown.”
Jennifer Yi (@kaiweevil) Keesha’s Hungry, from Star Wars “Her eyes are made from dyed round plastic and her mouth, nose, and teeth from painted sculpy. Ears are cut sheets of foam and everything is covered with fur. Cowl is pigskin laced with leather and I used some bones, feathers, and teeth I had lying around for decoration. Hands and feet are modified Yoda hands.”
Congratulations to the winners of the 2020 Masquerade Costume Contest! Your sewing and sculpting and hemming and hawing paid off brilliantly. If you’re curious about their prizes, you can read all about ‘em over here.
To all the participants: Thank you for making @comicconathome such an exceptional experience for every Comic-Con fan out there. We see you and we appreciate you.
Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Melinda Degani (Notsonuts Cosplay)
Costume Name: Miss Penguin for Mayor!
Costume Description: Female version of my favorite Gotham Vilains! My design is inspired by the Penguin in Tim Burton movie ‘’Batman returns’’. I used a cabaret style for my costume to represent both the classic and the eccentric face of the character in the same time.
Bio: Hi! I’m a Canadian cosplayer who have a passion for movies and TV series. I don’t have any restriction about cosplay sources at long as I love the character I’m doing. I did my very first cosplay in 2008. I was so young at that time, but I’m still well preserved for my age, it’s probably because of the great north cold!
Photo credit : A big thanks to D. Fundano photography for taking such great pictures of my arrestation by the Gotham police. But don’t worry folks, I’ll be back for the next mayor election!
Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Michelle Joy Princess Hedmond
Costume Name: Mulan
Costume Description: Recreation of Disney’s Mulan 1998
“The flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” ~The Emperor, Mulan
Makeup, Hair, Accessories, & Costume by Me. My whole costume was made without using any patterns. I usually eye it & wing it every time. My earrings are made out of hot glue & gold loose pigments. All the flowers, trims, & appliques, I hand sewed onto my costume. Total of 5 pieces to put together. The top has 2 snaps to close it in front. The Obi has three big snaps in the back. The belt is tied in a bow. The red skirt and gold train are both one skirt with a zipper on the left side. The lavender sash is one long piece with dollar tree flowers that I sprinkled all over! If you look at the sleeves, I also sprinkled flowers on them too. As if flowers from a tree fell onto me.
Bio: I’m passionate about Cosplay because it’s all of my talents in one! Sewing, Art, Design, Makeup, Hair, the whole shebang. I’ve always wanted to revamp my Mulan costume. The very first time I made my Mulan costume, back in 2015, it took me 2 days to complete because I was just so excited! With every year that passes by, I upgrade a piece here and there. It always evolves. At least a piece or new fabric is added or changed the next time I wear this cosplay.
I worked super fast within 3 days to bring my vision for a new design to reality. She’s my ultimate favorite Disney Character! I’ve looked up to her my whole life. This cosplay is so special to me.

Comic-Con Masquerade Contest: Catherine M. Fisher of Cat Designs Unlimited
Costume Name: Wonder Elsa
Costume Description: The perfect mashup of DC’s Wonder Woman and Disney’s Elsa - two great women combined into one!!! This is one sexy superhero you don’t want to mess with! She’s not as fancy as I’d wanted her to be since I’m working 2 jobs, fostering 3 rambunctious kittens, tending to a 14 yr old under the weather cat, and had such a short time to complete the costume, but Wonder Elsa is still ready to fight crime and become the newest member of the Justice League! The weather may be heating up in San Diego, but Wonder Elsa is keeping cool and ready to battle the forces of evil!
Bio: I’ve entered the Masquerade since my first year attending Comic Con (2005), so when SDCC 2020 was cancelled, I was super disappointed! Having a virtual Masquerade is a wonderful idea for us diehards - thank you so much for doing this! I didn’t hear about the virtual Masquerade till July 8th, which gave me only a week to come up with an idea and whip something up, and while she’s not a super fancy costumer or blinged out as I’d hoped to make her, it’s still an honor to be part of this year’s Masquerade at home!
Costume Description: This costume is a recreation of Ariel’s ballgown from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. I created the costume myself, from drafting the pattern, to construction, to hand sewn pearls and trim. I added an extra layer of detail to the dress in the animated film in order to bring this costume to life.
Bio: I’m a 20 year old college student from Austin, TX, who has been making costumes her whole life! I attended my first San Diego Comic Con in 2016 and had an incredible experience roaming the convention and watching the Masquerade. I’m so excited to have been chosen to participate in this year’s Masquerade!
