Colombian marine biologist Fernando Trujillo is renowned for his work protecting the Amazon’s pink dolphins and the river system that is their home. The recipient of the 2024 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year award, he has worked closely with local communities to create a conservation programme for the Amazon through its dolphins. He also coordinates international commitments to protect them. Trujillo was a key player when the 2023 Global Agreement to Protect River Dolphins was signed by 11 countries in Asia and South America. He recently surveyed Amazon rivers across four countries as a member of the multi-year Rolex and National Geographic Perpetual Planet Amazon Expedition. As part of his massive reforestation drive, 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate Constantino Aucca Chutas has mobilized thousands of people from villages throughout the Andes. His community-based programmes have been responsible for planting 4.5 million native trees in the mountains of his homeland, Peru. Through his second non-governmental organization, Acción Andina, he is spreading this momentum internationally, reforesting the Andes across South America in the hopes of preserving the mountain ecosystems of the region and the communities that depend on them. High Andean Polylepis forests are major contributors to water security from the Andes to the Amazon. Growing as high as 5,000 metres above sea level, they not only help mitigate soil erosion and provide a habitat for wildlife, but also act as a natural “water tower” on a giant scale. The dense vegetation gathers moisture from rising mountain mists and feeds it gradually back into the vast Amazon River basin below. The large-scale reforestation programmes set in motion by 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate Constantino Aucca Chutas have seen the recovery of the vital forests at a time when the water security they provide is more important than ever. A descendant of Quechuan farmers, biologist Constantino Aucca Chutas felt compelled to act 30 years ago when he saw the damage being done to the forests of Peru as a result of uncontrolled logging, wildfires and land trafficking. The 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate founded Asociación de Ecosistemas Andinos (ECOAN) in 2000 with the aim of protecting his country’s high-mountain ecosystems. Eighteen years later, he co-founded Acción Andina – recognized by the UN as an example of successful climate action – to roll out his reforestation model across the Andean region, galvanizing thousands of communities into planting millions of trees.
