Every chapter I read of Peter Cappelli's book “ Our Least Important Asset” reinforces how broken our hiring system is and the critical nature of these decisions on our organizations, our community, and our county. There is no single management decision that has a greater impact than who gets hired—or not hired—for specific roles. How hiring practices influence not only access to valuable resources that accompany good jobs but also determine the individuals who make pivotal decisions within organizations. “Even though hiring is so essential by almost any measure, the way we do it has become increasingly worse in the past two generations. The priorities of financial accounting play out prominently, cutting the up-front employment costs associated with hiring – which means headcount - while creating significantly more work for line managers. We have shifted from standardized and often elaborate processes based on research evidence about what predicts good hires to unstructured and informal approaches full of biases. “
