It’s Big Week On Tumblr, for the week of September 20, 2021!

Deltarune

Toby Fox and the Undertale fandom had their biggest week in recent years, celebrating Undertale’s 6th anniversary and the surprise release of spin-off Deltarune’s second chapter.

The popularity of Undertale on Tumblr since it’s release in September 2015 cannot be overstated. The 2D role-playing game has appeared on every single Year in Review list since 2015, no lower than the top five, and consistently appears on our weekly video games Fandometrics lists even six years later. When the first chapter of Deltarune graced our screens, it dominated our video game rankings for weeks, so it should come as no surprise that its second chapter caused utter chaos on Tumblr, especially the surprise reveal of a disturbing hidden route in the game.

The tag has been one of the most clicked topics on Explore since the drop, peaking at the no. 2 spot on 9/18. We’ve also seen a major surge in conversation around Undertale and the celebration of its anniversary, and new characters Spamton and Swatch who may or may not be in the running to become the next Tumblr sexyman. We haven’t gotten to play the new chapter yet, but apparently now’s our chance to be a big shot.

21st of September

This past Tuesday marked the 21st day in the 21st week of the 21st year of the 21st century. A day so funky, it can’t ever be forgotten. The Tumblr community celebrated the occasion the best way they know how: by posting, searching, liking, and reblogging memes and lyrics posts alike, making September 21 the most clicked tag on Explore with 64% more engagements than the next highest tag, Canada.

It’s a holiday that’s recognized across the internet every year, but this one came with some bittersweet notes too—Demi Adejuyigbe [A DID JU IG BE], who you might recognize as they guy who dances to Earth, Wind, & Fire’s ‘September’ to raise money for important causes, announced that this year’s video would be his last. If you feel like going down memory lane though, clips from videos past are scattered within the September 21st tag.

Sex Education

The third season of Netflix’s comedy-drama series Sex Education dropped late last week and fans are buzzing about the return of Maeve and Aimee, the ever-pretty Adam, and one very soft British boy. We always see a bump in engagement around Sex Education after the release of a new season—the show is super popular with fans on Tumblr not only for its relatable coming-of-age stories, but also its messaging around sex positivity.

The search page for this show is extremely gif-set heavy, so fair warning if you felt like sneaking a peek before watching the season. Also sprinkled in are text post commentary and, of course, memes.

Anticipation for the new season started early; Sex Education popped into the Fandometrics TV list at no. 12 the week before it dropped, and made a whopping 11 spot jump to no. 1 this week. The Netflix show reigned supreme over all other trending topics on Explore over the weekend, and jumped from the no. 3 spot on its release day to the no. 1 spot on 9/18 and 9/19.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

After eight incredible seasons, Brooklyn Nine-Nine aired its final episode on NBC last week and fans were sad. The series ended as we all knew it would: with one final heist. Minor spoilers ahead if you haven’t seen the series finale!

The precinct had been through a lot of the years and proved strong enough to survive even the loss of three of our favorite detectives to bigger and better things. The Tumblr community came together to reminisce and mourn the ending of a series so beloved.

We’ve seen a few GIFsets drawing parallels between scenes from B99’s finale and The Office’s finale which, to be totally honest, had us a little misty eyed. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine tag trended pretty heavily on Explore between 9/16 and 9/18, peaking at the no. 2 spot two days in a row. We’ll miss seeing fresh Rosa and Peraltiago GIFs on our dashboards, but all things must end.
