As an Open Water Scuba Instructor, I told my students that they had one focus – to get back to shore in one piece. That was an understatement. To return to shore in one piece meant focusing on each part of the process. These would include focusing on the dive briefing, understanding the dive plan, finding a dive buddy, assessing their qualification, experience, last dive details and confirming hand signals. The focus then moved onto checking and assembling their own equipment, watching how their buddy assembles their equipment before testing their regulators, buoyancy control device, depth gauge, air level, release clips, and any other equipment. Then the dive itself meant focusing on entry procedure, controlled decent, and once down, continual focus on buoyancy control, buddy check, depth check, air check, time check, and navigational check. Then ascent rate, decompression and exit procedure. Almost as complicated and stressful as teeing off in front of the golf club’s 19th hole. Without the focus on the small steps, the greater focus may not be achieved. This applies to our goals too. We need a sharp focus on achieving what is important in the moment, which then compounds into achieving the end goal. “The successful warrior is the average man, with laser-like focus” – Bruce Lee.

Imagine the scene. You checked in on time. You went to the departure lounge. You got on the plane, found your seat, and agreed with your neighbour which part of the armrest was yours. You went through the emergency evacuation procedure. The plane hurtles down the runway and you are pressed into your seat before gravity lets go its grip. As the aircraft levels out the captain make an announcement: “Good morning ladies and gentlemen. Welcome aboard. We’ll be flying west for about, ahhh, 8 to 12 hours and we’ll make a decision to land, ahhh, where and when we can”. What??!!! The captain doesn’t know where we are going!! You are outraged and begin crafting your complaint letter to the airline. How many of us know where we are going in life? Most people don’t have goals – they just drift along with where life takes them. Those people who have an idea where they want to end up, don’t commit to paper. 97% of people who write down their goals achieve them. Wow! Write down your goals people!! And look at what you’ve written each day. This will help you achieve your goals. You’ll be part of the 3%!! Do it!!

John Kehoe, in his work on Mind Power, tells us there are six laws of the mind. #2 – The mind is a sending and receiving station of thought. We are continuously affecting the outside environment with our thoughts. The outside environment is continually affecting us by the thoughts of those around us. Those of us in a relationship are forever affecting our partner by how we think, and our partner is forever affecting us by how they think (that may be why our partners can finish our sentences for us). That’s why it matters what groups we belong to, the social circle of our friends, what we read, and what we watch on television. These influences all have a vibration of energy which the mind receives, and which affects us.
