Autistic people are reported to have poorer Quality of Life (QoL) and well-being than their non-autistic peers. This project examined methods used to report on the QoL and/or well-being of autistic people by searching four databases in June 2023. The researchers identified 256 studies that reported on the Qol and/or well-being of at least one autistic person. Results were synthesised on who reported, who was reported on, how information was obtained including accommodations and community involvement. This is one of several projects Autism CRC researchers presented at #INSAR2024. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/g_jiMzaF

Our vision is to see autistic people empowered to use their diverse strengths and interests.
About us
Autism CRC was established in 2013 and is the world’s first national, cooperative research effort focused on autism. We provide the national capacity to develop and deliver evidence-based outcomes through our unique collaboration with the autism community, research organisations, industry and government. Currently, we have 55 participant organisations and other partners based around Australia and internationally. Our vision is to see autistic people empowered to discover and use their diverse strengths and interests. Our mission is to motivate, facilitate and translate collaborative autism research across the life span, underpinned by inclusive practices. Our programs take a whole-of-life view from diagnosis and the early years, through the school years and into adult life. We are committed to inclusive research practices and co-production of outcomes with those on the spectrum and their families to ensure our research provides practical and tangible outputs that benefit the community.

Measuring the Quality of Life (QoL) of autistic adults uses the same measures created for the general population. However, research has demonstrated that there are nuances and additional factors that influence autistic adult QoL that isn’t being captured. This project gathered information from previous qualitative studies to propose a new way to measure autistic adults QoL that captures these nuances and additional factors. This is one of several projects Autism CRC researchers presented at #INSAR2024. Read more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gMqxCZwR

Congratulations to Dr Chloe Yap and Professor Andrew Whitehouse! Dr Yap was awarded a Dissertation Award at the INSAR 2024 Awards Ceremony in Melbourne last night for her work using data from the Australian Autism Biobank. Professor Whitehouse was announced as an INSAR 2024 Fellow. In 2021, Dr Yap's research team conducted ground-breaking research that successfully challenged the growing popular belief that the gut microbiome drives autism, finding that "fussy eating" was the cause. https://lnkd.in/gdBse4wm In 2023, Dr Yap's research team investigated if fat molecules (lipids) contributed to sleep disturbances in autistic children, discovering a link between poor sleep and an unhealthy diet. https://lnkd.in/gcUvCyxj

Today is the 'International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersex discrimination and Transphobia' (IDAHOBIT). It is a day of celebration and commemorates the World Health Organisation's decision on 17 May 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder. This year's theme is: 'No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all'. We continue working towards achieving respect and acceptance in our workplaces, local communities and among friends and family. Learn more 👇 https://lnkd.in/gzUMFPbM
