Lions kept in private homes: a glimpse into the big cat industry in South Africa A criminal case has been opened after two lion cubs were found and removed from a private home in a town neighbouring Durban, South Africa this week. The owner did not have the correct permits for the animals and said they were sourced from a breeder who owns a game farm. ⚠️ At the beginning of last year alone, two tigers 🐯 escaped from residential properties, and two lions seen very close to towns were also suspected of escaping private homes. These situations highlight the lack of monitoring of captive lion facilities, as well as the ease of owning big cats the industry grants. The woman responsible for the lion cubs 🦁 has since said they were only meant to be cared for by her temporarily and that they “need to be released back into the wild.” Yet once big cats are handled by people from such a young age, it’s unlikely they will be able to be released. These are not pets, once in captivity, they require specialist diets, veterinary care and as natural an environment as possible. FOUR PAWS urges the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to publish a time-bound government implementation plan to end the captive keeping of lions for commercial purposes and close captive lion facilities urgently. The rationale for closing the lion industry applies to all big cat species so it’s vital that all big cats are included in the plan. Let's #BreakTheViciousCycle and close the industry for good! ❌ Read more here: https://bitly.cx/aTOf 📸 © North Downs Picture Agency

🚨Rescue alert: FOUR PAWS rescues last bear from bear farm in Binh Duong province 🇻🇳 Over the last few weeks, our team successfully rescued bear Chinh, the last survivor of a bear farm in Binh Duong province, Vietnam, where he endured nearly two decades of unsuitable conditions, and safely brought him to our BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh where he will begin his rehabilitation journey. ✨ Since 2019, FOUR PAWS has rescued fourteen bears from this farm. As their keeping on the farm was legal, farmers must be convinced to voluntarily hand over their animals. Thankfully, this moment has now come for Chinh who will join the other bears rescued from this farm at the sanctuary. ☀️🐾 Following his rescue a few weeks ago, Chinh has been thriving at BEAR SANCTUARY Ninh Binh. He is currently halfway through his 30-day quarantine period, where he has been receiving important medical care 🩺, a nourishing diet, and engaging in enriching activities. Chinh is about to be transferred to the sanctuary’s new quarantine area, which offers even more space and stimulating environments. 🌿 Our dedicated team is now preparing for Chinh’s comprehensive veterinary check to ensure he is in the best health possible. We are immensely proud of Chinh’s progress and the dedication of our team! #AnimalRescue #BearSanctuary #AnimalWelfare #bear 📸© FOUR PAWS | Hoang Le

(Un)Happy #WorldMilkDay! 🥛 Let's uncover the truth about our milk production and consumption. 🚫🐄 Did you know dairy milk generates 2-4 times more greenhouse gas emissions compared to plant-based milk? 🌿 This also includes dairy products like ice cream, cheese, and butter. The dairy industry not only harms our environment but also exploits billions of dairy cows worldwide. It's clear that the climate and cows do NOT ❌ #EnjoyDairy. Additioanlly, factory farming subjects dairy cows to immense suffering: regular impregnation, separation from their calves, diseases from overproduction like fertility disorders and mastitis, and a confined life in stables. After just 5-6 years of continuous physical exploitation, cows are sadly sent to slaughter. 💔 Furthermore, the combined greenhouse gas emissions produced annually by the top five meat-and-milk giants exceed those of fossil fuel companies like Exxon, Shell, or BP. We can't ignore this. Join us in demanding change and shifting towards plant-based alternatives. 🌱 Together, we can #StopFactoryFarming and make a real difference!

A few months ago, foxes Ronja and Tomek 🦊 lived in tiny wire mesh cages on fur farms in Poland, like millions of animals in the global fur industry, and were probably to be killed this winter. After their rescue and spending time in a transitional facility, where they could recover and receive medical care, 🩺we were asked to help. We recently brought them to our TIERART Wild Animal Sanctuary in Germany, Ronja and Tomek's new, species-appropriate, forever home! 🏞️ We are monitoring them closely during the first weeks and preparing them for socialization with each other or with other foxes, some of whom share a similar story. After this initial time, they will move into a new 350sqm natural enclosure – especially designed for foxes, with opportunities to dig, climb, hide and play! 🐾 We’re incredibly grateful to give these two foxes a new home. However, millions of animals are still on fur farms experiencing immeasurable pain 💥 and suffering right in the middle of Europe – just because of unjustifiable fashion trends. It is time to end their suffering! You can #DoBetterForAnimals and make a big difference for the animals in the upcoming European Parliament elections 🐾. Tell your MEP candidates to pledge to animal welfare 🇪🇺! ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d32CyQbT #UseYourVote #TIERARTWildAnimalSanctuary #EU #EuropeanParliament

Rescued and recovering! 🦉❤️ Found severely hypothermic, this little long-eared owl was blown out of its nest during a storm. 💔 Luckily, caring passers-by brought it to our OWL & BIRDS OF PREY RESCUE STATION Haringsee, where it is now being looked after! The poor owl was chilled and weakened, likely stranded for some time before help arrived. Now, however, the little one is gaining strength and eagerly devouring meals! Soon, our team will place the owl with a foster family of its own kind, ensuring it receives the care it deserves until it's ready to take flight on its own. 🌿 Since the bird is unharmed, a return to the wild at a later point is very likely! Like all owls, long-eared owls cannot build a nest themselves. They breed almost exclusively in the nests of crows or magpies, which are unfortunately still intensively hunted and fought against. Sometimes it gets to the point that these birds are even exterminated regionally - then the long-eared owls no longer have any "homes" there. You can help by providing artificial nesting aids like shallow willow or bread baskets lined with cozy materials. Let's make sure these majestic creatures have a safe place to call home! 🏠✨ #OwlAndBirdsOfPreyRescueStationHaringsee #AnimalWelfare #StoryTelling

The Answer: Animal Agriculture 🐄🐓🐖 Every year, globally. Subsequently, this causes harm to both the welfare of those poor animals and the climate and environment at large. How can you make a change for animals and the climate? 🌱 Start by reducing the number of animal products you consume. 🌱Replace animal proteins with plant-based alternatives such as legumes, mushrooms and nuts. Plant-based alternatives are tasty, good for animals and the climate. 🌱 Get active: educate yourself, talk to others, join protests and get organised – we need all hands and paws on deck to make a systemic change! You can make a difference! Resources about reducing, refining, and replacing animal products are here: https://lnkd.in/denTRk53 #ClimateCrisis #ClimateSolution #StopFactoryFarming

Making a hotel reservation for your upcoming trip?🧳 Before booking 🛎, check out the hotel’s animal welfare and climate mitigation goals. Why? Because factory farming accounts for the suffering and slaughter of an estimated 92.2 billion farm animals, and hotels can make a positive impact reducing this suffering! In our recently conducted FOUR PAWS Hotel Challenge ranking, Hotels that scored below 3 stars ⭐ are not focusing on meat and dairy reduction. 🥛⬇️ Hotels can step up their sustainability targets and become more animal-friendly by: 📅 Setting concrete and timebound meat and dairy reduction goals 🐾 Not sourcing food from suppliers with unknown or poor animal welfare practices 🌱 Extending their food options to include more plant-based alternatives In the meantime, tag your preferred hotel below to implement positive changes for farmed animals and climate protection.
