Hey! Hope you had a nice birthday!! This question is very random but I think you're smart and I respect your opinion so I figured you were a good person to ask. I have a friend who is pretty racist. She jokes around about how she couldn't be friends with me if I dated a black guy. Now with all that is going on in Ferguson she is very much in support of the people and aware of the racism. How can I point out her racist remarks? I don't think she understands that her little racist quips are wrong.
Ahhh, anon. First off, thanks for the birthday wishes! Secondly, that’s a really tough position to be in. I’m from the south and I’ve been faced with the same situation many times. The advice I can offer you is this: point it out every time your friend says something like that.
By not saying anything, you’re tacitly endorsing it. If she’s really your friend, she’ll be open to hearing what you’re saying. If she says something even vaguely racist, TELL HER. POINT IT OUT. Try to explain how what she’s saying is just plain wrong. A lot of people are genuinely ignorant, especially if they come from a background of white privilege.
Any if she objects or continues to say racist things? You don’t need a friend like that.
